Colerain 1817 Common Rifle barrel .54
« on: February 26, 2009, 04:32:01 PM »
I just acquired one of these as part of a lot of parts on auction. It came with the package and was  the only item I really didn't need. If my efforts to sell it fail, I may try building an 1817. I don't have any experience with Colerain barrels and I'm curious about the 1/56'' twist rate which seems a bit fast for a .54. Opinions would be appreciated.

The grooves will be about .012" in square rifling and .016" in round bottomed.  While I would prefer a slower twist in a .54, it will shoot 80gr. 3F to 140gr. 2F just fine. I'd use a .020" patch and .535" ball for the square rifling and a .022" patch for the deeper rifling.  Any change to that would be with a thicker patch.

I once had an old H&H, 54 cal barrel with a 1-56 twist that was a dead nuts tack driver. It was one of the most accurate barrels I have ever owned, so make something out of it and shoot it in good health.
God Bless,

Duane, how much are you asking for this barrel if it is still available?

I have an original 1817 Common Rifle that has been percussioned, cut down to half-stock, and  bored out that would be a good source of parts for the new stock going under that Colerain barrel. The lock would have to be re-converted and Rifle Shoppe carries the parts, I think. The original stock could be used by lengthening it to save work, and you could even keep the original barrel so you would have a real shooter with the Colerain and a "diddled with" original for conversation.
