Seeing Double X 3 (Double Horns)

  The top horn is about 10” TTT. At the center it is about 1 ¾”. They are joined by a piece of Maple that has a hole through it so powder will flow( All 3 horns are set up the same way) and the horns are attached with Wooden pegs. The tips are two part Whitetail Antler, 3 steel pins hold them together and another 3 to the horns, both are open. Color is AF, some oil based Leather dye and wax. These are a matched set of horns.

#2 is 7” TTT. At the Center it is about 1 ¾”, the two are held together with Wooden pegs, tips are part of the horn and both are open. Color is again AF, Dye and wax. These look close but they are Not a set, just worked into one.

#3 Is obviously not a set, they are about 6 ¾” TTT,  at the Center it is about 1 5/8s, held on with 8 Wooden pegs. Only the light colored tip is drilled

I like the bottom one's shape the best. Too bad the colors don't match better but you go with what you've got. Double horns hold a fascination for me so I'm impressed with these. It's hard to get two horns that match and will "co-operate" with the maker. Well done Tim.

Hi Tim,  You are getting to be the master of these double horns.

 I am actually surprised how many vintage double-horns have survived the ages.  Maybe because they are unique, or maybe there were more out there than I am thinking?

I thought of you this week when I saw a Don Troiani painting of the King's Mountain, NC Revolutionary War battle.  Check out the guy at left in purple.  A double horn or what?   :-)

A great triple header. Any reason the third one down, with the two colors, couldn't be used for shot and powder as in with a fowler? Seems practical to me.

 I have done a number of doubles over the years, I hunt with one I made 35+ years ago.
The idea of shot one side and powder on the other sounds neat...but think about it...how would you turn the back horn to get to the shot/powder?

Been wanting to make one of these for awhile. Yours look real good. I need to get some more horns and I will have to see if I can come up with a pair.

Tim,You got me thinking. Why not a shoulder strap down to a swivel hook, like a large fishing swivel, and then down to the horn. Turn it as you need it. A lot of my stuff isn't period correct, but it works for me.

I like the shape and the contrasting colors of #3.  You would know instantly whether you had the powder or the shot side.  If you need to use the rear horn, just twist it on it's straps to the front, use it and then return it to it's previous position in the rear.
