Where do the horns go?
« on: March 09, 2015, 07:05:20 AM »
Where do all the left side horns end up?  Since I shoot lefthanded, I carry my horn on the left side to keep it out of the way.  Most of my rifles are right handed, and the sparks could hit a horn carried on the right side.  Most of the horns advertised are right side carry horns.  Somewhere in the world there is a pile of horns from the left side of the cow's head.  Or maybe there is a giant herd of cows with only one horn.

Well I don't understand this cause everytime I order horns it seems that 8 out of 10 are left handed .  :D
I was beginning to think all the right handed where being made into buttons or something.

I am with Ron and Tim on this one. One thing I have run into is some people Do Not know the difference between a Right/Left horn. Another note, many Right hand horns were/are carried left, take a look at some old horns note the twist/curve then look at the wear pattern.
Here is how I see Right and Left, Rt on Rt, Lt on Lt.

There is an outfit in Laredo Texas called Frontier that supplies good horns. I cannot find their address in my file and a search on the internet got nowhere, but the last time I ordered from them was about ten years ago and I was able to order them an left hand and right hand separately. Good quality horns for skrimshawing and the price was right. I still have boxes of them.

This is an age old debate and I have found very little agreement about what constitutes left or right side horns. It is very much up to the person who is wearing the horn. Whatever floats your boat!

Frontier went caput many years ago. The lady that ran it decided to close up one day and locked the doors and walked away.

The side orientation of the horn to me is the way it curls around under my arm.  The spout goes around and lays against the ribs.  If the spout curls to the outside, it goes to the other side of the body or it will hang on things.  Some of the difference is the way the strap at the plug is installed.  A staple will make the horn turn on the strap.  I use a four way braid using round leather thong that I learned from horner Gerald Dukes.   This makes a skinny strap that will slide around my shoulders without binding.

Also depending on where they are cut, the horns I posted above, could be reversed.
Look at the left one and think about cutting it about 2/3rds the way down.
The placement of a base or neck staple can also be used to force a horn around, I think that's what ECC121 is talking about.

This is always a fun discussion. I would have said that the ones you showed were just the opposite of what you said. :-\
The good thing about it is you can set them up the way you want and then argue with people ;D

Exactly what I meant Tim.  I don't know if a person could decide on an unfinished horn's carry side.  Where it is cut and the strap placement have more to do than the raw look.  My initial comment was more about the ads for the horns.  Most are advertised as right side carry.  I have an old flat horn that is right sided, and it hits me on the arm because of the curl to the outside.  The flattened, banded horn I bought from Tim at Lexington last year works fine as a left side carry with its slight tip curl to the right.

Oh so confusing!!
In my fuzzy little mind, I think exactly opposite of what Tim said.  The horn on the left is a right side carry horn and the horn on the right  is a left side carry horn.  Which means to me that the horn curves up and in as it is naturally shaped, not after cutting and placing a strap.  Just as it is normally.
I bought horns by the sack of about 100 (well, actually, I bought horns by the ton, and they were packaged in sacks of about 100 large horns and maybe 150 medium sized horns.  The sacks weighed about 70 - 75 pounds each.)  For each bag of larger size horns I got, I had to take two bags of medium size horns.
I would say that each sack contained more horns for left side carry (as above listed) than right side carry.
It was perplexing, because I really always thought that a cow typically grew one of each.  Where did the others go?  The nice large, white, right hand carry horns might have all gone to a button factory in Taiwan.  Wouldn't that be awful?

Sorry guys, but I will have to bring your reputations down a notch as I come aboard as well. I see it the same unless a radical cut in length/angle is to be had.

To me, both interpretations could be correct.  It comes down to how you view the horns; on or off the cow.

Tim is correct in terms of on the cow.  Horns come off the head and head downward before they start twisting upwards.

If I wanted to make a right-hand preference horn for someone (a horn whose shape would conform to the right side of the torso and have the tip pointing downward and in instead of upward and out), I'd use the horn from the LEFT side of the cow in the 1st picture.

The next pictures show a pretty good comparison between the "twists" on a horns from the right and left side of the cow.

I have never had the opportunity to select horns while they are still on the cow.  I'm usually digging through a stinking pile of horns on a hot September afternoon at Friendship, looking for horns whose twists and shapes conform to the right side of the torso best.  What I am looking for is best illustrated by the horn Tim calls LEFT in his picture.  To me that is a right-side carry horn with the one he calls RIGHT being a left-side carry horn.  I'm usually finding horns whose twists lend themselves best to left-side carry as most of the best right-side carry twists were picked out before the pile ever hit the ground.

I agree that with thoughtful cutting, shaping, and staple placement, you can force a horn to lay correctly on whichever side of the torso you prefer.  I find that it is easier to do that with horns that are straighter overall to begin with.  There never seems to be a shortage on the straight horns!  ;)

EC121, are you still looking for left hand carry horns? I am going to the shop this week, did you want me to look for some?
