Hey guys,

Just recieved my new Rice barrel (1" straight 44" long, .32 caliber) mounted in my new walnut Gillespie shaped stock. It is H.E.A.V.Y., just the way I wanted it. $#*!, it weighs more than two sacks of squirrels! Looks uber cool as well. Thanks to Dennis Glazener for all his assistance gettin' it here. Can't wait to get started. Curt Lyles is forging me a Gillespie buttplate and trigger guard, which I expect soon.

That will be a heavy rifle! I made a .32 caliber a few years ago using a 42 inch 7/8 barrel and thought that was pushing the limits. It was a little hard to hold while shooting off hand. Best of luck with it.

It is authentic. One of the things I have noticed about originals pictured is that they were very heavy barreled. I could only shoot the thing off a rest, but I think that is how they were shot. I do not know if it is heresay or what. I remember reading from some source that southern mountain rifles were often built with very soft iron barrels. Some claimed they could be swamped with a drawknife. Wrought iron could be worked that way. They felt they were the most accurate, which is not all wrong in thinking. Whetyher that explains the weight or they just wanted a heavy accurate rifle I do not know. Good luck on your build.

Just wondering, how do you plan to shoot this rifle? Offhand or off a bench? Are you going to hunt with it ? Or just target shoot? chuck-ia

Prone with my Dachshund as a rest...

Seriously though, I will shoot crows and squirrels offhand when necessary, with a rest when I can. I will try and shoot it on the squirrel trail at rendevouz as well. That will be a workout though. I am under no illusion, this is going to be a heavy rifle. My intent was to better reflect some of the originals that WERE quite large in diameter. So it's heavy, I'll adapt, just like they did.

I guess it depends how old you are whether you can adapt or not!

This past fall I only used my muzzleloader rifle for squirrel hunting. It is a 41 inch 7/8 barrel in .36 caliber. I hunt with a mountain cur (squirrel dog). Whenever she would put one up a tree I always looked for a small tree to use as a rest, by putting my hand on the tree with my thunb sticking out and the gun resting between my thumb and index finger.
This really helped steady the rifle to ensure head shots. I squirrel hunt in an old growth forest so some of the shots would be almost 50 yards when you factor in the height of the tree and the distance I was fromn the base of the tree.
This may help you when using the rifle in the woods.

Ez,
If it ends up being too heavy and all else fails, you can turn it into a .32 caliber "chunk gun."

I've tried for several years to get some over the log matches up and running in the Pacific North West.

Is it fairly easy to get .32cal wooden ramrods that long without any grain runout, 'eyes' in the wood, etc?
Would you be planning on using something like brass or steel for a range rod or also stick with wood?

I have a number of nice quality 48" hickory ramrods of varying diameter that I got from Dennis Glazener. The batch includes several of 5/16" diameter, one of which which I will use for the gun. Haven't thought about range rods per say, but would probably go with brass were I to make one for the little .32.

I do believe I read that a lady won the Trammel bros log shoot 3 or so years ago with a .36! In my very humble opinion I do think that rifle will be much heavy for offhand - Chunk and stix fine.l Course you could get in to lifting weights. I'm not joshin on the weight lifting!! It helps! A Lot!

Yep, sure would. My chunk gun is a Bean style .45 caliber with hand forged iron mounts. It has a 1 1/8' by 48" long Getz barrel and a Durrs Egg flint lock stocked in Cherry. Maybe I will bring it this year. I have my time off already in for Heffley. Gail and I are ready for another excellent time.

Ezra, a couple of years ago Dennis and i had a table at heritage days in Brevard.A Gillespie showed up there close to what you are building. It was not a 32 but it was hefty for a Gillespie. I have some pics of it , or Dennis has some if you want to see it . The fellow that had it, had the stuff that went with the gun, Horn, pouch and a ox whip , i think a blowing horn also . He had got it from his grand dad. I want to copy it for a chunk gun it was around 12 to 14 lbs.

My .25 cal. flintlock has a 48" barrel and weighs 9.2 lbs. I really enjoy hunting squirrels and take a rest every chance I get (I do go to a gymn and work out with weights).
