« on: March 10, 2015, 11:35:26 PM »
Received my new Rifle  this weekend at the Monore ML show built by my good friend Captchee here on the forum, figured English walnut stock, c weight old stock Don Getz 54 cal swamped barrel , Chambers deluxe Siler lock, Davis triggers and German silver hardware, very happy with the end product, can't wait to shoot her!

Hi,
Love the engraving!  It certainly is an eclectic mix of styles.

Dave, I gave Cap the parts and told him he had a blank canvas and to build me a prom queen, not a line for line Haines

Good job on both your parts. Let the maker MAKE!  That's how you get the best stuff.  ;D

Beav, that is absolutely  outrageous. Oh man that is pretty. He did a fantastic job on that one and it's even got your name on it so I can't sneak all the way out there from Alabama and steal.
I bet you set around the house the rest of the week and just look at it :D

Excellent craftmanship, far beyond any thing most of us dream about, however I don,t think I could have swallowed  hard enough to put a screwed on T guard on a Haines, a second lock screw most likely have been used also.  The sideplate left squared at the front would have looked better if rounded,  although there are one or two in RCA left that way. With your talent you,r bending to much to customer satisfaction.

I would agree with all you said Joe . as i said , its not  truly a Hainse rifle  in far more ways then what you mention .
but i try and build what the customer wants . since we were already deverging from a true Haines , i pretty much felt  that alittle  was no diffrent then alot . so I ran with it .
i do wish i had taken better photos of it  while i had it .
again i agree with what your saying

I would imagine that if we could travel back and speak with Master Haines himself he would agree to build whatever the customer desires(within reason). No builder in his right mind is going to turn down a job because it doesn't exactly conform to what the builder considers the norm. On the other hand there can be that "know it all" kind of guy that is way out in left field, so you the builder has to strike a balance.

....No builder in his right mind is going to turn down a job because it doesn't exactly conform to what the builder considers the norm....

I respectfully disagree.  There are builders out there that do just that.

There are builders who build keeping strictly in the the historic styles, I've seen them turn work away.  There are builders who build strictly contemporary pieces and have no disire to build period longrifles, I'm sure they have their reasons.  There are builders who play both sides.  Who's in their "right mind"?  I don't know.

For some it's about money and they'll take any work they can get.  For some it's about integrity and staying true to their craft.  Some are students of history.  Some just love to put rasp to wood and will take any opportunity to do so.

We all pursue this for different reasons and it's up the individual which direction they choose to go.  Every individual is motivated to do what they do for different reasons.

But all of that aside, and not speaking of this gun in particular as it wasn't posted here for a critique, there many here that are of the opinion that even the most decorative contemporary longrifle should still be judged against the originals when it comes to architecture.  The best carving, engraving and inlays do not make up for architectural faults.  Under all the applied decoration it is still a what it is, a longrifle.

I'm not judging the choices of others, just stating my observations. Enjoy, J.D.

Kermit pretty much summed it up.  Tastes vary and so must the market.  Be a pretty boring world otherwise.

Jim, you've got yourself an very artfully done rifle there.  Enjoy it.  J.D.
