A couple of noggin's

Been playing around with my new wood lathe again this week.  Decided to put some of the knowledge I learned from my local wood turners club on turning to the test.  Pictured are 3 noggins I made.  One is from curly maple, one from English walnut and the third from black cherry.  They were a little more work than I originally thought, though I did cut my time in half from 6 hours for the first one to 3 hours for the next 2.  Learning curve was good.  These are about 4" diameter.

Those really came out neat Dave. I think I see how you did it and it's a pretty slick idea. @!*% lathe's are addictive, aren't they?

Those are some nice noggins.  When my shop warms up I have some Maple Burl I bought in either Washington State or Oregon a few years back.  It should make some nice ones.  With the right chucks those little handle tabs should not be any problem.

Yep, now that I have practiced and have a method I am ready to get a couple of burls and do it up right.

Wow David,  nice but........
I'm a guy whose never run a lathe, and really have no idea about how everything works.........my mind is TOTALLY befuddled, doing mental gymnastics trying to figure out just how the $#*! you can turn a bowl with a handle stickin out a couple of inches!?!?!?!?
Of course, that's why I have you inlet my barrels too!!!!
Please put me out of my misery!  How do you do that????

It's really not that hard. You just have to make sure your fingers, hands, elbows, arms and turning tools do not enter the plane of the handle radially outboard when the noggin is spinning.  Then, you just finish shaping and rounding all the wood in the "No fly zone"by hand.

I almost took pictures of the process when I was tuning the third noggin.  I am going to try and get my hands on some burl this weekend.  If I do, I will do another noggin and document the process for a tutorial.  If I do not get to it next week, it will be another month before I get back to the lathe.

Really nice work...been looking for a noggin for quite a bit.  From what I've found, you'd corner the market.  I'd buy a couple right off the bat!
