Pistol inspired by William Antes
« on: March 13, 2015, 09:35:13 PM »
This is a little pistol I just finished up inspired by a Rev War era pistol by William Antes. It has a .50 cal Charlie Burton barrel,Stan Hollenbaugh Lock and is stained with homeade Nitate of Iron stain(pretreated with tannic acid ala Jim Kibler)and finished with Chambers oil finish. As always all comments are welcome.

That is a great looking pistol Mitch!  I think you captured the essence of Mr. Antes very well.

Very work nice Mitch.  I like what you did here a lot.

What did you use for the tannin treatment.  I've found tannic acid in powder form on-line, as well regent grade powder and the food safe stuff, etc.  Which way did you skin this cat?

OH! I almost forgot......."nice wood" ;)  Enjoy, J.D.

That's exciting Mitch!!  I've got one on the bench with the same lock, and similar inspiration _ A.Verner.

I'd like to hear more about the 'added tannin' - it sure made the curl pop on your build!  thanks for posting this.

Mitch - You really did a fine job shaping that pistol.  Yep, gorgeous piece of wood, but that's the tree's doing - the way you made it "pop" however is splendid.  If you'll allow me to be really nit-picky, I notice your pin hole for the rear tab on the triggerguard.  I've seen it done both ways on originals, so it's certainly not wrong at all, but if you induce a little bend into the triggerguard you can "spring" the rear portion into place and then have the single pin on the forward lug.  Again, that's really nitpicking, I think it looks great!

Great looking pistol and a pretty nifty stand.  Would you share more pictures of the pistol and the stand?

Thanks Guys!!

I figured the wood would get some comments  ;D it is from Freddie Harrison. He threw it in as a "kicker" in one of my trips to visit him and buy stocks.Freddie loved to haggle(particularly with us Yankees) and my visits were an all day affair with good portion of the afternoon spent in friendly haggling over how light my wallet was going to be when I left. This piece was just to sweeten the pot so I left with an empty wallet.Wish I had bought a bunch more........

The tannic acid treatment is basically exactly as Jim Kibler described and used on his super fowler http://www.jimkibler.net/blog/2014/10/19/staining-and-finishing-burl-maple .I used powdered tannic acid from Amazon same as Jim.I thank Jim for his posts on the subject,it was something I read about in Bill Knights book but never tried.I need to do some more experiments with it but was pretty pleased with the results.

Tom Currie
I worked from three grainy photos of a signed Antes pistol in Henry Kuafmans The Pennsylvania Kentucky Rifle book and their is a side view in SE Dykes pistol book. The pistol pistol I worked from looks nothing like the one depicted in the new Moravian book and is of a much older style. The pictures were enough to get the overall feel and to get the trigger guard finial which I was able to get out of the pictured Goering trigger guard. The pistol featured a bear face buttcap similar to this one which is a feature I really like. The carving in the picture was'nt clear and was'nt something that appealed to me so I used some of the basic elements and some from other rifles of the region.

Eric V

You bring up a good point (I don't mind picky  ;D ).I actually added the tab for the pin.Going with no pin certainly is a possibility and one I did'nt think about at the time. It's hard to tell from the bad pictures I have but it appears there in no pin in the original and I could have left it out.

Dave b
I would be glad to take pics of anything you would like just let me know.As for the stand I can't take credit for it ,it was done by a friend Matt Stein http://www.matthewstein.com/New/Default.htm Matt does super work and I know hes makeing some more when he gets a chance as I've ordered another  :)

Just curious how the stand balances the pistol in several positions like it does.  Your pistol is so gorgeous, it must hold it pretty steady.

Mitch, that is some very fine work there. You nailed the color on that great piece of wood. The tang carving isn't too shabby either!
