Project Completed for those who wanted to see it.
« on: March 14, 2015, 01:35:41 AM »
For those who requested to see it.....for everyone else   :-X

Yes Dennis, it shoots VERY WELL.  An old timer at the range yesterday said it was the fastest flintlock he has ever seen.  It will put three rounds in the same hole at 100 yards (well maybe almost)...if only my eyes were able to see and good as it shoots.

Oh yea, Bag with hatchet....Shawn Webster, Horn....Crosby.....along with an original mid 1800, a hawk too.  frock, etc... yep got them as well and a nicely made shooting box made by a forum member as well.  Even have an antique man around the house.

Davis, Chambers late Ketland, Rice 40 cal 44 inch "A" profile.

Builder made the patch box, breech plug and tang extension, trigger guard, side plate, pipes/tube.  I think the butt plate was purchased and reworked some.  Stock "nothing special" sights.

OOOOOOOH if ONLY I ACTUALLY HAD done it.  So maybe it's in the wrong place on the board (but there is a reason for that).  But No, I had it built however there was a lot of direct input by myself along with another very well regarded maker whom I shall not name and the actual work was done by a very obscure local maker and close friend.  This was his #111.  For what it's worth I also have his #50, #69, #88, #99 and #106...six in all.

You should have seen the way that tang inletting was done.  Probably nothing new to most but it sure was to me.  He cut it before the butt stock was actually formed.  That is to say there was a lot of wood from the surface down to where the actual tang would ultimately be.  "Eliminates chip-outs" so the builder says.

Doc:  Cannot say the rifle will make it to any shows but I can say the builder is unlikely to attend.  Very much a "senior citizen". A wonderful, spiritual man who works with the full support of his wife for his gun making passion.  But in his early years he has attended such shows and been highly recognized for his work.  When we first met up with him he seemed to lack the spark for building that he appears to have rekindled more recently.

I keep saying I don't need any more rifles.  But somehow an idea comes to mind or I see something and then.....well, I suppose you all know how that goes!  I feel selfish for demanding so much of his time making things for me but he honestly seems to LOVE it.  I'm going to take a break from buying for now but I know another project will materialize.

I also feel very honored that so many have had a positive reaction to this build.  You people are the experts expert and hearing your reactions makes me feel very good.  Make no mistake however, I can handle criticism but for now I feel honored to be the custodian of this work.  I like to say that the one original I have speaks to me and I try to listen carefully to the tales it has to tell and the history it has seen.  The fun of a replica is that I am its original custodian.  I get to write the first few chapters.  I have the privilege of passing it along to future generation who will hopefully care for it as it continues it's journey.  What a great "hobby".  More like passion and love!

BTW, kaintuck:  Get tomtom to take a close look at the tang again and check out the metal is more than lolly pop as it extends beyond the lolly pop and up to the top of the comb.  We thought about bringing it even further down the comb but decided against it.  THAT would have been neat but as it is it's still nice.  And just for the record, thanks again for your words of encouragement.

I have no problem with someone posting someone elses' work. It's good for us to see this, as it's handmade, and we need to keep this longrifle thing alive.

Thanks for posting the pictures, Molly.

Molly;the man who is mentoring me is in that same catagorie as you described. We joke about him getting on here as a member.he is certain,as I am,that the rifle building would take a back seat while he obsesses here. His work is excellent, and I am fortunate to have several with his name on the barrel.Again,a handsome shootin iron.Enjoy making history with it.   Dave F :D

Nice work. I wouldn't call it a "reproduction", it appears to be real to me, just new made instead of old.

So, why does the maker's name have to be such a secret? He seems to be a competent builder...why all the secrecy?

Mike, I would hazard a guess that he don't want to be bugged by the dreamers.......gets to be to much drama.... ;D
Besides, what's in a name???......let's call him Samantha Fox :o ;D :D
