Bob Roller Locks and Triggers on Ebay
« on: March 16, 2015, 09:59:33 PM »
1986 Flintlock sold for $320 & long bar set triggers for $133.

Six others wanted to pay north of $250 for the lock. Two others bid $100+ on the triggers.

A 1986 percussion lock auction closes at 8:30 PDT. There are 5 bids above $150; top is $166 @3 pm EDT.

A second set trigger (short bar) is currently at $112 with two bidders above $100.

I have no idea what Bob would charge today. I'm posting to see if these are fair prices or out of line.

It is hard to get a fairer price than an auction like we have just seen.  Large audience and several days of opportunity to bid.  I would like to know what Bob called that flintlock model.  Rather unique looking pan/bolster.  Internals look great with nice long arms on the mainspring and plenty of space on the nose to drill for the front nail.  I almost bid but I have a Roller small manton flintlock for which I have yet to decide what to build around.

Not that it matters, but both locks and both triggers were 87s, not 86s.  ;)

I didn't look at the auction you're referring to, but When you build a lock from scratch, or spend much time tuning and replacing the innards of a commercially available lock, you quickly realize that the locks Bob produces are worth every penny.

greybeard; Sir, Mr. Roller has stated many times on this site he is no longer excepting commissions for his work at this time of life. Many people that have an interest in his product do not have the ability to deal direct with Mr. Roller with favorable results. When his locks and triggers show up on any medium, we go for it. The prices will be fair to all the winners. Many members on ALR have Roller's and would not sell them before E-bay or after and will not sell them now. Some time back I inserted a WTB Roller lock on this site, Not One, Not One single reply. Do I think the prices or OK, h@&x, yes. Have a great work week. AJ.

At least this should give us all guidance on the true market value of a semi-custom lock.

At this present time I am working on orders from last Summer.I have been plagued with arthritis in my right wrist and sometimes cramping and loss of control in the fingers of that hand.I work when I can for about 5 hours and then have to stop when the pain flairs up. I won't over load on patent medicines like Advil or Aleve and am on no other medications. My wife made an eye exam appointment with an eye doctor for this coming Friday and the person she talked to almost fainted when told that at age 79 I took no medications for anything. I'm old,not sick and THANK GOD for that.
The lock and trigger prices on E bay are what a willing buyer will pay a willing seller.I am flattered to see and hear my work is so highly thought of now.I never look at auctions so have no idea as to what sells and what doesn't.
After the current work load is gone, I have thought of doing 3 to 5 jobs a month and offering them on this forum. This is a "maybe"even if I decide to continue to work.

If the lock on E bay has a double throat cock,it is a Ketland I offered to the "Flint Hawken"builders.
It was for the most part, rejected because I wouldn't make them for the low prices wanted in the 70's
and 80's.Most went to Germany and to Switzerland. It was a superb performer but a very labor intensive lock and I have no intentions of making them again..

Hope your health lets you continue what you enjoy doing. I would definitly take a Hawken Percussion Lock and a set trigger for the same.  Only reason I would want them is to be able to look at them and know who made them.   Collector pieces for sure.  I might even order the Carson Rifle hardware from Don Stith if I had the Roller items for it.
79 and no medicine is quite an accomplishment. I admire you for that.

The one thing demonstrated that may not be obvious is that there are 6 folks who have committed to purchase a flintlock for more than $250, and another half dozen committed to a percussion for $150+.  While 10 or so want to send $120 for triggers.

Again, I do not know what Mr. Roller charges, but here is a fair price evaluation of his current output.

You are exactly right.  Jim Chambers just raised the price on most of his locks to $175, which I think is a very fair price for one of his locks.  So one of Bob's locks for $250 or more is IMHO worth every penny.

My arthritis may just be making me a little grumpy this morning; however, I don't care how fancy the wood is, what custom barrel it has, or how much carving and engraving it has, a gun without a good quality lock is basically a tomato stake for your garden.  My two cents worth.

I guess I'll have to raise the price of my guns from $100,000.00 to $150,000.00. I hope bill gates doesn't get mad.

AJ,
The ones that do not have favorable results are those who want me to work for sub minimum pay because it's a part for a muzzle loader.IF THEY WANT "CHEEP",I tell them to buy a carton of baby chickens and
cheep" will abound.A while back I was asked if I had a dealer discount and I told this man that I won't pay somebody to buy my work.Years ago I sold to a few dealers but was paid prevailing prices and they in turn did resell them at a profit. I am pleasantly surprised and flattered at the response to the auction and the remarks about my work being "collectors items"ARE a surprise indeed. One Hawken maker posted that on a website,Brant Selb is his name but I never thought of a modern lock in that regard. What is seen in these locks and triggers are reflecting my opinion of the purchasers and my enjoyment of doing it no matter what year it was done.

I tried a search on e-bay and came up with about a hundred pages of "not what I was looking for". Anybody have a link?
Thanks!

Bob, I have osteoarthitis in all my joints, including my spine.  It is really bad in my wrist and fingers because I use them all the time.   I take a regular, twice a day, dose of prescription ibuprofen (Advil), naprosen (Alieve) or diclofenac.    These are anti-inflamatories and can help with arthritis as well as a number of other things if you take them regularly.  You do have to switch off from time to time as you build up a tolerance.

This and a lot of other medicine is the only way I can work at all.  I am only 53 and I have lots of pain from lots of sources, mostly neurological problems and arthritis.   At best, I can only work 4-5 hours a day in the shop on a regular basis.    The thing is, that drawing, painting, and working on the computer is almost as hard on my wrists as making guns.    Most nights,  I need narcotics to sleep because of the pain in my hands.  I also have to elevate my left arm on a pillow and elevate my feet (I have an adjustable bed).   It is the only way I can relieve the pain enough to get to sleep.

If you can do without the drugs, great, but don't suffer needlessly, just because you don't want to take the pills.  I am not saying that you are doing that, but some people do.  I was only taking the ibuprophen and naprosen (over the counter, but in prescription does) when I was really hurting.   My doctor pointed out to me that these were anti-inflammatory drugs and NOT analgesics (pain killers); it was best to take anti-inflammatory drugs on a regular basis.    They are more effective that way.

You don't want to do that without discussing it with your doctor, but it might be worth a discussion.    If you have rheumatoid arthritis then that is a whole other kettle of fish that would require seeing a rheumatologist for much more serious drugs.    I suspect, however, that you have the run of the mill osteoarthritis that comes from over use and old age.

It runs in my family,  everybody has it from a relatively young age; but most people get it if they live long enough.   There are lots of anti-inflammatory compounds to treat it, both natural and man made.   You really should be using one or more of them.   Like I said, there is no reason to suffer more than you have to.   However, the best way to treat osteoarthritis is to do as much as you are physically able on a regular basis.

I can't even roll over in bed when I wake in the morning.   My spine and all my joints are that stiff.   It takes a while to get everything moving, but once I do,  things are pretty good for most of the day, and even the painful activity each day reduces my overall pain.    Pain can be a vicious cycle where pain begets pain if it limits your activity.    It is a downward spiral that is always tough to stop or slow down.  Heaven forbid, if you have to work your way back up.  I am sure you already realize that.

Any, this was meant to be a pep talk.   I am not sure how peppy it was.   :D

Jerry, when you start selling at that level,  I don't think $50k make any difference.   The folks who can spend that kind of money, walk around with $10k in their pocket for lunch money.   :D

I know some people nearly in that category and they don't normally carry any more money than you or I would. Bing Crosby said he never carried over $ 250.00.  I never met Bill Gates. I don't think he is a gun guy.

Jerry,

Yea,  I knew I was exaggerating a bit.    I still don't think $50K would make that much difference to someone considering paying $100K for a gun.

The super rich might not carry more cash than me, but I bet they have a black Amex card in their wallet.    I always have a debit card in my wallet.   I even use it to pay for my lunch at McDonalds.   Between the wide acceptance of plastic and payment with your phone,  there isn't as much need to carry cash any more.   You can even pay with your phone at a lot of vending machines.   I have seen this at most VA highway rest stops.  I even talked my hair stylist into getting Square so I could pay her with my debit card.   I always give her a good tip.   I use Square, myself, to accept plastic; but most gun people still pay with cash.   Actually,  I prefer cash or checks because they don't cost me anything.   Square charges me 2.75%.

Bob, the lock which just sold on EBAY did not have a double throated cock.  The pan and bolster were rather different than any of the locks which I am familiar with.  Pan is round and had rectangular projections with the rounded part of the pan not reaching back to the plate as best I could tell.

Here is the lock in question:

That lock is another Ketland and has been made by me starting in 1962.I finished my last one about two months ago and will make no more of them.It started as a lock made by Chet Shoults of LaPeer Michigan
beginning in 1956 or 57 and was entirely made from investment castings produced by some very expensive ,high quality dies.It was presented as a lock made by a fine metal craftsman and it looked good and worked well.Mr.Shoults lost control of the dies and I got some parts and made few and made a number of them over the years. In 1970 I made up a linked spring mechanism and made them ever since using that idea or variants of it.Willt Cohran copied the original mechanism and I helped him as much as I could thru phone calls.
The components for this lock can still be obtained from Jerry DeVaudreuil in Wooster,Ohio and his phone # is 1-330-2445-4500.It's a cell phone and he has no Email.Jerry owns the dies for all parts of this lock if someone wants to make them again. I don't.
