New Rifle Building Bench Set-up (finished pics. added)
« on: March 17, 2015, 12:37:43 AM »
I had been using my Wilton vise with good results till I got to the stock shaping phase of my build. I had my eye on the wood river "pattern makers / gun stock carving vise" for some time now. I liked the movement of the jaws to clamp non parallel surfaces.

I also needed a better support system to hold the rifle on either side of the vise. So this is what I came up with. Smart Dog thanks for the dimensions of your vise!! That enabled me to start building the supports while my vise was on back order.

I bought two 24" lengths of Incra-track from wood craft. They use standard 1/4" hex head bolts. I in-letted them into my bench top on either side of the vise. This gives me all the freedom I need to move the supports where ever I need them.

The supports are made out of red oak. The knobs for locking them in place on the bench and clamping the dovetail for the vertical adjustment are also made by Incra.

The T shaped posts that ride in the dovetail that the rifle will actually rest on are two different lengths to give me flexibility as far as what side I need to use. I also plan to cover these in leather.

This was my previous set-up.

This is the new set-up.

This picture shows the maximum reach of the support.

Nice clean setup.  I like the idea of using T-track for adjusting the support arms.

I am going to have to look into T-track on my free standing bench with the 2 Pana-vises.  2 T-tracks set up parallel to hold the Pana-vises would allow me to slide them back and forth to adjust for different length rifles and various interferences.

Thanks for stimulating my mind.

Hi Melsdad,
Wonderful workmanship!!  It is so nice to see someone take pride in their tools and setup.  We are kindred spirits. Now get building some guns!

Most brilliant.  Very good idea.

Yeah, thanks for the ideas.  Gotta make me a new setup and it's going to be some sort of woodworking/gunmaking mix up of sorts.  Time will tell.

Very nice!! Only thing I don't see is the air compressor and hose for blowing all the $#@* out of the T Track that I would get in it..   I have a table with t track for my Drill Press and I play the dickens trying to keep stuff out of the tracks.......  But I am going to do something like what you have done. the movable rest is a real important tool.

nice set up...........great use of your space..........but you need to throw a bunch of clutter onto the bench, and have a overweight tom kat walking thru it, he would test the strength of the rest also..........

nice set up, marc n tomtom

Good idea there.  For those like me who would be worried about needle files, other small tools and parts falling in the tracks, a simple solution is to cut several small lengths of 3/8" x 3/4" pieces of wood to drop in after the arms are positioned.  I say several as then the length is adjustable as the arms themselves.  Easily stacked at the back of the bench when not in use.

Enjoy, J.D.

Got this project finished up today. The pieces are stained and rubbed with 5 coats of B.L.O. and I covered the contact area with leather. Only thing I am going to do yet is black oxide the fender washers like I did to the head of the carriage bolt.

I also made new jaws for the vise. They are made of maple with double layers of leather glued on them.

Nice. That's a good looking set up. Now you need a shop vac to keep those T-slots cleaned out. I also saw your heavy bench vise in a previous picture of your shop for those jobs needing better holding power like breeching etc.

Shopvac is right under the bench. Yeah the vise I was using I am mounting to another bench for heavier work.

Thanks for the comments guys!  I am happy with how it turned out.

very nicely done, and looks very effective.  Just curious about some of the assembly details...

It looks like the uprights and the top cross bars are built up of thinner pieces?  But the base section is solid piece of oak?   Built-up certainly simplifies the mortice and tenon details.  Nice!

All the parts are made of glued up boards. The base that clamps to the bench is 2.750" wide. Yep it did simplify the mortise and tenon doing it this way and it is also very strong.
