Philly Horn/Screw-Tip Later Type

  This one is about 12” around the outside curve and 10 TTT. The base is Poplar, about 2”, attached with four nails, the finial is a separate piece made from Maple. The Collar and Tip are Horn, threaded ½-13, no staple, strap held by the Collar. Color is AF, followed by Lt Brown oil based dye and Brown shoe polish and some heat.

Looking very good, you're really getting these screw tips down pretty well.
Wondering why the 1/2-13 thread?  Also, why the two piece baseplug.
Inquiring minds need to know.

 John,
  This is my take on a horn that is on page 63 of Art DeCamp's excellent book;

Pennsylvania "Horns of the Trade" Screw-Tip Powder Horns and Their Architecture

 In it there is mention that the late Philly horns had a thread that is close to 1/2-13. The write up on this particular horn says that it has a Poplar base with a separate Hardwood finial.
 I must say that if you do not have Art's book it is worth every penny, well written,  dimensions are given, it is a History lesson on Pa. Screw-Tips and the photography is great. The Encyclopedia on these horns.

Yep, got it as soon as it came out.
I must confess that I have not spent enough time reading it as I should.
Been looking forward to retirement to get that done.
So, here I am, retired, and still haven't picked it up.  Go figure.
Another of my big fallacies is looking forward to wintertime to get in some reading.  Hah!!!  That don't work either.

    Carla got it for me for Christmas and it has not been closed since I opened it! Sounds like you need a 101 class in retirement ;D Maybe it just hasn't sunk in yet.
