I have finally gotten done with this case just in time to leave on Wednesday for Oak Ridge, TN to shoot.  It is made from hickory.  I think putting the felt in took about as much time as doing the wood working.

Debating putting felt over the 2 wooden compartment lids.  Did not take picture of the lids open.  There are 2 compartments, the right one is fitted for my sights box, left one is for whatever

Constructive opinions are certainly welcome.

I think felt would look good on the compartment lids.  Nice job on the case. I like the hickory.

You did a very good job of it ;) . I bet it is HEAVY - maybe put some wheels on it??? I made a small - 12" X 6" X 8" coin box out of 3/8" hickory the box alone surprised me on how heavy it was.

yep it is way heavy. the compartment lids are also hickory.  I would not use hickory again.  I had the wood on hand and cut out 2 boxes, one hickory and the other walnut.  The walnut one I just have the box made, no hardware fitted.

Entirely my opinion, but I would not felt the compartment lids.  You have nice looking wood, and should show it off.  I have always had this mental block connecting felt covering with cheap material, but as I say, that is just me.

Heck for stout case there! I'm guessing you used 3/4" material pretty much throughout. Back when I made boxes for friends for scatterguns, pistols, scopes and such, I made the sides of the box from 1/2" stock and the top/bottom from 1/4" to 3/8" material, depending on the way it was built. Yours should stand up to a few generations of use, given somewhat reasonable care.

I used to resaw full 4/4 and 5/4 stock for my box material. Pretty wood, BTW.

The material finished is 7/16".  If I was to do it again, I would plane it down some more.

Beautiful case!

I would add leather straps, anchored to the bottom surface, to hold the stock against the bottom of the case so ti does not flop from bottom to top as it is carried - Velcro would be invisible as it would be 'under' the strap ends. Stud fasteners would need a backing under the stud to prevent stock damage, unless there is a different method I cannot think of at this time.
