Most recent project is coming along

I got #8 a little while ago and over the past 3 days Ive just been taking my time on it. Its actually a walnut stock which is pretty much impossible to find on a CVA Hawken as I believe they were very limited. One of those, we got some walnut, make what you can and switch over to beechwood once you run out, kinda deals. Beautiful wood grain but a SOB to fill the grain.

Its a 54cal with slow twist 28" barrel. I got everything all bedded for heavy recoil. I am browning the barrel now, along with the sight, gotta order a new rear sight and tomorrow, start the painful task of polishing the brass :bash:

Will have to do a little hammer work as it strikes to far back on the nipple. Functions perfectly fine, just bugs me as it looks awkward.

I actually didnt have to stain it. I tested with boiled linseed oil first and it turned it a  nice honey/oak color. I am a fan of darker stocks, so I did one coat of LMF nut brown and then one coat of dixie gun works stain. Truoil finish and then buffed carefuly back with heavily oiled 0000 steel wool.

I like the color. From the picture it looks like it has a nice reddish undertone which I find particularly attractive.

Nice looking modern muzzleloader cap gun redux-- the stock refinish looks nice.

I have an old .22 Winchester bolt action in my family that had a very dark reddish black toned walnut stock that when oiled was really beautiful. It had probably a million coats of very thin linseed oil as the final finish. My Dad did the finish job when he was in his 20s--- I think he got the gun when he was 8 years old-- given to him by his dad.

Haven't seen many CVA Mtn rifles in the past 30 years.....they made millions of these where did they all go?

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

They only made thousands of them.  Most ended up in the junk heap from improper care by newbies.  All the parts ended up as Ebay fodder for aspiring new gunbuilders.  ;)  FML is trying to capture the market and is collecting all the remaining ones.

That looks nice. I've never had a CVA, but the one a friend used to shoot was a fine and reliable shooter.
