patchbox cover
« on: April 11, 2015, 09:22:30 PM »

This is a photo of the gun I presented at the Engravers guild show in Vegas 2015. The photo is of the gun in it's construction phase. The carving and stock work  was done by James Schulze. One of the very best carvers I have ever seen. You can see some of the design for the wire work drawn on the wood.

Beautiful work, Jerry (as always)!  The wire would be a really nice accent.  Is the piece finished?  if so, any chance you could post some of the finished rifle?  I find myself being drawn more and more to this type of work...  Thanks for posting the photo!

Thanks for all the great comments. I can't put any more photos of this gun out until the publishers come out with their publications with this gun in them.  Some of them will be in the Engravers Guild publication soon and then maybe gun digest.

I got a great hands on look at the finished gun at the Vegas show, and it is spectacular in every detail!
Besides Jerry's obviously fine work, the carving is beautifully done and finely detailed! And needless to say, the fit and finish are as perfect as perfect can be!

Plus I had the pleasure of meeting Jerry, and James Shulze!

I can't do a tutorial on this because it would be a course in master engraving and gold gilding. Like a couple of years long. But I will say this. The silver overlaid parts are only .030 thick believe it or not.  It was a major obstacle to do relief engraving of this nature on that thin of metal. To solve the problem after the silver was formed to the basic shape I poured the back side full of fusible  alloy that melts at 165°F. The chisel work was then done and then the selective plating. There is some gold inlay and some plating on the parts.   The silver is nailed on with silver nails. They are not visible because they are incorporated  into the flower designs.

I like plain rifles, too; but couldn't you have at least "fancied" it up just a bit? ;D

That rifle is truly magnificent, as I've come to expect.  My friend, you are surely "something else".

Jerry,
Was that carving done by there Jim Schulze that is a dentist and lives in California?   As I remember The Jim Schulze that I am talking about was at the Custom Gun Builders and Engravers show in Reno when we were there representing the CLA. a few years ago.  I thought his name was spelled Schulze,

It is so good to hear from you. Where do you keep yourself?  Yes that is the Jim. and his name is Schulze.  I recommended  he get your book on wire work and he did.
