Horn and bag kits or building supplies

I have now finished my ca. 1810 Armstrong long rifle.  I want to make my bag and horn.  I want them to be of a style, plausible to 1810 Maryland. 

I see blank horns are in short supply.  Is Crazy Cow Trading THE place to go?  Track seems to be out.  How about bag kits.  I could certainly make one from scratch.  There are no places to get leather in my area.  It is just easier to get a kit, and cheaper at he end of the day.  I think I might want a fabric strap.  Those are finger woven?  Anyone sell those? Any good webistes on making bags and horns? ...well other than here? : )

Crazy Crow has some possible bag kits for sale. It looks like they have leather straps. You might be able to modify them and add a woven strap of your own.( http://www.crazycrow.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=CCTP&Category_Code=800-100-000)

 The Weaving Welshman has straps for sale.

Also, if you are looking for a quality strap, get one that is Inkle loomed. Weaving Welshman straps are tops but there are several others that make very nice ones as well.

 You can also try Tandy Leather, they have all sorts of leather in various thicknesses.

Tandy is not an option.  The closest one is 82 miles.  That is 164 miles round trip.  That is $30 for gas and 3-4 hours in horrible bay area traffic.  Not worth it for leather to make a small project.  

Powderhornsandmore looks cool, except I can not open the pages, they run away from the mouse ponter, really weird.

I live in Salinas, work in Watsonville.  I am not in the SF bay area, about 100 miles south near Monterey.  I will definitely check Leatherwise.

In this day and age, most folks in this pastime has to depend to some extent on the Internet for ordering hard to get materials if those material are not available in their area.  There are many source's for your needs by also doing a Google Search.

 :)I was just at Log Cabin Shop in Lodi, Ohio last Saturday and they had quite a few horns and enough other fixins to make your own or buy ready made.

 You may not absolutely need it to assemble a pouch kit, but the first investment that I would recommend in making a pouch is T.C.Albert's book "Recreating the 19Th Century Hunting Pouch".
 Then when you want to do more research on original pouches get Madison Grant's "Kentucky Hunting Pouch".

Hmmm...I just conjured up the PHM website and had no difficulty navigating it.  Good looking site.  If I didn't already have a few hundred horns in storage, I would buy from there.

X2 on TC's book.  Even if you don't build to his patterns, it's an excellent how to source.  Once you understand the principles of bag making, its fairly straightforward designing your own.  You will be much happier with your own build than with one of the kits, IMO.

You can order supplies online from Tandy as well as other suppliers.  Google is your friend!

As far as horns go, you.might want to cozy up with bigsmoke.:)
