Newest Gun Build
« on: May 03, 2015, 11:48:41 PM »
I realize all of the mistakes I've made in building this gun and I've come to the conclusion that the ability to build a gun depends on one's ability to correct mistakes.  Also, the gun I had in mind at the beginning of this build was somewhat revised somewhere in the middle of the build.  So I guess this gun can truly be called "contemporary".  I used a Davis lock and a Colerain .54 42" barrel.  The triggerguard and the buttplate was made by Marc Tornichio.

I think that the rifle is outstanding, anyone would be proud to have it. I agree that good builders must be able to correct mistakes but really good builders don't make too many of them to have to correct. I have never made a rifle that did not have errors that were bothersome to me as the builder but unnoticed by anyone else. You did a great job and you have every right to be proud.

I like that gun a lot because it is not the same old standard boring long rifle.  It reminds me of something Fortney would have made.  From the photos you did a good job on the mistakes. Never tell anybody your mistakes they will find enough on their own.  Engrave it.

Those captured lid boxes hold a special place in my heart....you did a fine job incorporating  it into your build.

I like it, sort of a Fordney moves to North Carolina sort of thing. Fixing mistakes is what it's all about....otherwise I'd be out of business.... ;)

Thanks for the comments.  The gun started out as a southern Virginia/Carolina gun... But then the Fordney wrist is very compelling.  When the build was almost complete and I was trying to figure out how to embellish it, I recalled seeing a beautiful gun that was built by Jack Hansbery that incorporated that wrist... and decided to go for it.
I shot the gun this morning and windage is perfect although it shoots a little high at 50 yds.  I guess I'll have to do a little filing.

I fell you did a great  job with the checkering, not as easy as many suppose. The whole gun comes off well. Gives me some inspiration for a squirrel gun I'd like to build for myself this summer...(as if that's really going to happen) ::)
