lollipop tang

Will be making a lollipop tang from the original barrel tang.
Can i keep the taper from the original and weld the lollipop part, or should the walls be straight or there is no importance. From picture some seem to have a taper others seem straight.  My build is a Tennessee style but has no specific builder but taking what i like from different schools.

Frenchman, You can usualy get a better fit by fileing a slight taper or bevel on the tang and the lollipop...Ed

I don't understand your question.  When you say keep the taper from the original. Are you talking about a flared tang like is on the left?

  You are right, some are straight and some have a slight taper - usually very slight, less than what you'd have on the average commercial flared tang. Easy enough to cut some off the sides.
  You often see these with two screws in the main / wide part of the tang, another thing that is easily done and makes it look "right". Traditionally they are both wood screws , but usually I will use a bolt for one of them and run it down through the trigger plate.
