Cleaning/Loading Jags, stainless steel threads?
« on: June 01, 2015, 07:47:56 AM »
I've asked this question on another forum I belong to and thought I'd ask it here too. I've read about others who have broke off their loading jags in their bores during loading because the threads on their jags were made of brass. It scared me enough to buy all new jags with steel threads. I use the same jags on my range rod to load with at the range and to clean my bores with at home using soap and water. I now worry that the steel threads on the jag might rust. I know the obvious answer is to clean and oil the threads on my jags after using them. My real question is, are there anyone who makes brass jags with stainless steel threads? If so, where can I purchase them from? I searched around a little but could not come up with anything. Do they even make jags with stainless steel threads? Any information or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Respectfully, cowboys1062.

The threaded studs are easily unscrewed.  Buy some stainless set screws and replace the steel ones.  BTW I have steel threaded jags that are 35yrs, old with no rust.

I make my own jags and fit them to my guns. They are brass bodies with S.S. shanks. The brass jag is drilled and tapped for #10-32 threads and then I take a S.S. cap screw and cut off the head - screw it in the brass jag body until I have 1/2" to 5/8" thread sticking out of the jag then I silver braze it to the jag. It will never strip out of the brass jag. I say to take your existing jags and cut off the brass threads and replace them with either steel or S.S. threaded screws and solder them into the jag use a low temp solder compatable with S.S. if you don't have silver braze. ;)
