Question for those using Hot Stuff CA glue
« on: June 04, 2015, 11:52:21 PM »
Hi,
In a previous thread, several of you that use Hot Stuff CA glue mentioned storing the glue in the freezer or refrigerator to lengthen shelf life.  The manufacturers instructions mention doing that with unopened bottles but advise against it when a bottle is opened.  They state that moisture from the refrigerated environment will invade the glue and shorten shelf life.  Have any of you experienced this or have you found that cooling still lengthens shelf life for opened bottles?

That's interesting because a refrigerator is basically a dehydrator as I understand it (but admittedly I have senior moments).  If that's the case, moisture would not be a problem.

I do everything wrong.  I don't always cap it.  I store the accelerator right next to the CA bottle.  It a takes a couple of years for it to get too thick to use.  Just buy smaller bottles and forget about special storage.

I buy the smaller bottles from the rc hobby sites and keep them in the shop.  I never close the one I have open.  It will eventually thicken, but it is easier to open another than to mess with the fridge.

I buy the small bottles and I have never used one up.   They either clog up or disintegrate.   I had one bottle just spontaneously spring a leak; what a mess!

I agree Mark.  I never use up a bottle, they just get discarded.

I have found CA can get hinkey on curing as it gets older.  A couple of times I worried it wasn't ever going to cure/harden/dry.

Like an old can of Tung Oil or similar, it's cheap, so why risk ruining a project with a lot of hours in it to save a couple of bucks?

Best wishes,   Marc

I quite honestly am surprised there are so many here that use this stuff. I have never had a project that required such space age fixatives. It's not that I'm so old, and out of the loop, that I don't use Ca glue on other things, I just never saw a use for it on a long rifle.

Since I have never had a cracked stock, I use CA mostly for hardening wood screw threads and repairing my rc planes.

Thanks everyone!
I appreciate the input.  I am not going to store the glue in my refrigerator for the time being and see what happens.  I probably will not use up the glue very fast so I'll have the chance to see how long it lasts.
