All,

I have decided that I want a custom Flinter and have chosen Tennessee Valley Muzzleloading to build it.

Here is what I have in mind:

-TVM's Tennessee style rifle
-42" swamped .45 cal barrel
-aged finish lock and barrel
-super premium maple stained Red
-14 1/4 length of pull
-Single lid patch box
-Brass furniture
-vent pick inlay

I would love thoughts on the above build.

Sounds good to me but I would get rid of any brass and go for iron.

Yeah...heard that from others too....I know iron is more historically accurate.  Like the look of a red stock with brass.  Still mulling that around.

If I were going to call it a TN, I'd be sure to have an English lock. And unless I was imitating a specific TN original with brass or german silver, I'd use iron(steel) furniture.

Also I'd have a full tang (stops just short of comb) and double-set triggers, crescent plate.

I don't know their (TVM) specific standard spec sheet on this gun-haven't looked in some time.  I do know that a lot of gun making outfits will hang a German style lock on a what they call a "TN" and that's the absolute last thing one expects to see on an original.  I'm sure it happened.  Just don't see many of 'em.  Except in catalog/newby land.

and no extra wood.  ;)

I'm not quite sure what you are specifying on a "single-lid" box.  There are dozens of those.

Also I wouldn't get too hung-up on any specific hue of red.  The wood itself often has more to say about color than not-even when using dyes.

As the others said, it's yours-do what you want.  But since you asked nicely, there's my little pea-pickin' ideas at this point in time, as best I can tell, no warranty, as-is. ;D

Red plus brass......she'll be a bright one! ;D

Look at more internet pictures.......just sounding what has been said....most mtn rifles age are spoken softly by the subdued wood tones with aged steel parts. The rifle is yours, and Matt will make you a nice one..... ;D

I'd find someone who can make the web between barrel and ramrod less than 7/16". I think I'd contact Dennis Glazener (sp?) about one of his Gillespie guns. They are well made and historically correct.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

I've made a couple changes.

Going with iron furniture and a Late Ketland style lock.

Having only a rudimentary knowledge on Southern Rifles, I've been doing a lot of research on them in the last few months.  One thing I've found is that it's not possible to define a standard style for a Southern Rifle.  Just taking a look at the Kentucky Rifles Foundation's CD on Southern Rifles you start to understand what a huge range of styles are under the umbrella of Southern Rifles.  And that CD is just scratching the surface.  I don't know if it's really possible to build a "generic" Southern Rifle without straying in the realm of a fantasy rifle.

As for what type of hardware they had, there's really no standard there either.  I really like the Gillespie family's rifles and decided to build one based on the Philip Gillespie rifle pictured on pages 36 and 37 of "The Gillespie Gunmakers of East Fork, NC", by Dennis Glazener.  This rifle has brass butt plate, patch box, trigger guard, thimbles and entry pipe, a poured pewter nose cap, and a copper washer on the single lock screw as the only side plate.

I'd rather pick a particular maker and build a Southern Rifle in that style as best as I can rather than take a pinch from this one and that one and roll them all together into a single rifle.  The same goes for any style of rifle really, not just Southern Rifles.  Others may agree or disagree as they choose, but that's my tuppence on the subject.

Mole Eyes, a good Unicoi County, TN reference is Dave Byrd's Gunmakers of Buffalo Valley & Greasy Cove.  Which is a long way from the celebrated Soddy Daisy, but both East TN.

Buckeye, I think you'll get a better overall TN-style that way (your changes).  But of course, they all vary until you narrow it down to one maker or one gun to emulate.

I drilled a vertical hole in my stock for a quill/pick after handling a few originals done the same way.
