Not knowing what caliber the barrel is, you may be able to reach in with the breech plug removed with needle files/sand paper to shape it to the bore and then polish. If it is a small caliber barrel things can be a little tight, and then it might be easier to remove it to shorten it, depending on the tools you have available. If you do shape it while it is place, obviously take care to not mark the bore any more than possible. You will be working in the "powder chamber" portion of the barrel though, so if you mark the rifling it's not a big deal, but you do want to make sure you polish any file marks so it is easier to clean.
