English Influenced Hand Canon
« on: June 26, 2015, 03:40:39 PM »
Just finished up this American with heavy English influence pistol. It was an interesting little project that met the customers unusual specifications. It features a 6" .75 cal Bobby Hoyt canon end barrel.Due to the big breach I had to scale the pistol up some.First gun I've ever done where instead of telling myself to take more wood off I kept reminding myself to leave it a little heavy  :) .

Good morning Mitch; Sir, Fine workmanship on this great looking pistol. The geometry of the enlarged breech area was expertly completed. Great wood selection. One item that jumps out for me is the large name on the lock plate. Have a great week end. Thanks for sharing. AJ.

Really nice pistol - love the color on that great piece of wood.  Did you use the tanic acid/nitric acid stain combination?

That pistol turned out great Mitch.  It is well proportioned and looks like it would feel good in the hand.  I love making pistols.

Beautifully detailed pistol, Mitch.  Nice fit and finish.  I'd love to see a target with a five shot grouping...is that possible?  Thanks for posting.

That's one of the coolest flintlock pistols I've seen. I've never seen that canon end barrel before.  it really gives the pistol a unique look. I like the belt hook, too.

Thanks guys for the kind words!!

Interesting that you picked up on the size of the engraving. When studying original examples of American gunsmiths copying English work I noticed in many cases they signed the lock rather large as compared to the English signatures.Making it that big was something I wrestled with in my mind .Thanks for your observation it's something to think about.

The stain is Tannic acid with aqua fortis after that.I really like how the contrasts come out with this combination.

This pistol was headed off to the new owner before I got a chance to shoot it.Maybe I can talk him into showing some  pics of his targets.

Excellent work. Looks like a snake getter to me. Or anything else dumb enough to get in front of it ;D

Tallbear.

You don't happen to remember the approximate dimensions of that barrel do you?  I mean aside from bore and length.

Sorry the only other dimension I remember is the breech was about 1 1/8" I refined it a bit from what Bobby sent me to clean up the taper on the round.

Mitch that is a fine pistol. I think it might be best to use the two hand hold when you touch off that magum!😁
