Please do no use aluminum.

Well, given that Rob's choices were between aluminum or stainless steel, at least aluminum was used on some percussion rifles as inlays. So it at least has precedence of use on the guns, where as stainless steel has none.

It really does not take that much material to pour a nose cap and to pour one is easier than you think (plenty of good info on this forum).  Check the salvage yards for old beer coils as they are tin and it pours nicely. One old Bitannia mug from the flea market will more than do the job.

Every Lehman I ever saw (not many, admittedly) had a short brass cap, but I don't recall ever seeing one of cast pewter.

Thanks again guys  and JTR in particular  ,I have a steel butt plate and trigger guard and thinking about it  I will go with the brass nose cap but will that look ok with steel thimbles The gun i am building is a flint half stock from the ground up lock stock and barrel
