Buck County Inspired Rifle
« on: July 10, 2015, 10:14:30 PM »
This is a rifle I just finished up.It has it's roots in Bucks County but also has some details influenced by the customers wants and needs.Kind of an interesting project that features a .45 cal Rice match grade barrel.Stan Hollenbaugh's Ditchburn Lock and a super piece of wood from Dunlaps.Finished with Nitrate of Iron stain and Chambers Oil Finish. As always all comments are welcome.

That is a beautiful rifle. I really like it, but the wire inlay transition from the panels  to the tang looks odd to my eyes. Probably a matter of taste….. Still, very very nice work. I always appreciate your posts.

Really nice. The architecture carries the rifle, but (as you already know) it's art heavy forward and needs a box.

Lovely work, Mitch. The form is really nice. I want to see this gun in person.

For those who like the finish on this rifle(I do!), you may listen to Mitch talk about his finishing techniques at Dixon's Fair, Saturday at 3PM.

It is a beauty, Mitch.  The shape and architecture is about perfect. That piece of wood is stunning.

Very well built rifle Mitch! I can understand the reason for no patchbox was most likely a customer decision, not wanting to cover such beautiful curl. I have a special appreciation for Bucks County rifle's and you nailed this one as you do everything that I have seen so far from your bench!  signed.....a big fan of your work! :D

Thanks guys for all your input ,it is most appreciated. As some of you guessed the lack of patchbox was at the request of the new owner. He is the first customer I've had where the wood was of top importance to him.It was a long search for a piece of wood he could fall "in love" with.Once we finally tracked down the perfect piece he wished that the buttstock be free of anything that might distract from the wood.

As for the wood it was a super hard piece that was a pleasure to work with.We got it from Dunlops.

In addition to the beautiful wood, the workmanship is superb, Sometimes we drool over a piece of wood and overlook the artist's talent.
Keep at it Mitch, you will catch on before long!!

Nicely done, Mitch!  It is a nice piece of wood and you've really accentuated the curl.

Hey Mitch - That's a fine rifle, very pretty lines, and you did an excellent job highlighting the figure through the buttstock, which I imagine is what your customer had requested - I'm sure he's happy with it.

Me thinks that piece of wood to be an old acquaintance. How inspirational to see it put to such artistic use! My hat is off to both maker and customer.
