Edward Marshall Rifle-photos?
« on: August 17, 2015, 12:15:34 AM »
I have the RCA books and these are the only photos I have of the original rifle. Does anyone have others of the original or one they made? Lucky I love the Marshall rifle you made! Was there any bulge around the entry pipe on the original?...Doesn't appear to be but it is hard to tell on the photos I've seen

I built mine from the Chambers kit. It has the swell in the forestock .  I'm told that the measurements were taken from the original.  Look on their website for some photos.  I really like the rifle.  Mine is in .62 cal and is my moose gun.

I have checked all my references (books and digital) and I could only find three additional photos in Three Centuries of Tradition.

3 black and white photos on Chamber's site. I was also wondering if the original had a toe plate

I'll have to do some searching.  I may have a few.

Cmac,
Yes, there is a slight swelling at the entry pipe that is accented by the carving.  I don't know where you are located, but the original is housed at the Mercer museum in Doylestown, PA .  At one time there was a pretty good set of drawings of the rifle available, although I think the dimensions given on the drawing seemed a bit generous....

I made a Marshall rifle many years ago, but do not have any photographs.  However, when I made the rifle I talked to Frank Bartlet, who had built one a couple years earlier, and he gave me milar drawing of the original.  I haven't seen it in around 30 years, but I will see if I can find it.  It would be of help.  I went a bit smaller than the drawing, and my rifle still was a big rifle.  Great free hand rifle, and hunting rifle.  I killed a deer at 92 paces with it and it was like I had turned a switch off.  It was a 58 cal Getz Marshall profile.  I will get back with you Mon or Tue. by email and let you kow if I could find the drawing.  I stored it in a tube, but have moved one time since then and am not sure where I stored it.  I have thought about building myself another using Jim Chambers parts set.  The lock he uses in his parts set is a bunch faster than what I used many years back.  If I build another, I will use Jim's parts.

I'm still searching for pix of the original.  Here's one of the entry pipe on the one I did a few years back.  There is a very subtle swell that is also blended with the carving in that area.

I was able to find my milar drawing and one print of the Marshall rifle that Frank gave me back around 1979 to 1980 time frame.  The paper drawing had faded so bad that it will not be of use, but the milar is still clear.  I have been unable to find a place locally to get a paper print made.  The equipment we used at work many years back was moved to a plant in India, so I am out of business there.  The local college also had done away with the old process.

Jack Haugh made a rifle around the characteristics of the Marshall rifle that I used for reference.  Photographs of his rifle is in "Contemporary Makers of Muzzle Loading Firearms" written by Robert Weil on pages 111 and 112.  Frank had used these for reference when he made the rifle I seen back then.  Haugh  used a slightly different barrel profile and length than the original, but the photo's are still good references of a Marshall indian walk rifle.  I have a group of photographs of a Marshall rifle that one of the folks at Williamsburg had made, but have not been able to put my fingers on them to date.  I will forward these to you if I can fine them.

I have an article on it by John Bivins. Got to handle it in the late 70s but not allowed to take photos. Amazing gun.

Muzzle Blasts published an article about it years ago. Try contacting the editor to see if they'd send you a copy. The article even had pictures of parts removed such as the inside of the buttplate showing the lead fill at the heel (the buttplate is swaged brass sheet) and the inside of the lock.

If they can't send you a copy, send me an email and I'll see if I can make a copy of the copy I have.

I suspect there may be a few new members here who don't know the history behind Marshall, the walking purchase, etc. I think this link provides about as good a brief summary as I have seen.

Thanks, Mark Esterly, for the link to a photo of the orig.

Eric Kettenburgs website www.erickettenburg.com has photos and historical information on the Edward Marshall rifle. They are under the online articles tab, Part 12 .
