Percussion Mountain Rifle done, FINALLY!!
« on: August 27, 2015, 08:31:40 PM »
Here is the rifle I have been working on since spring.  It is for a friend of mine and I could not talk him out of a caplock.  Little went well in the process of building it.  I started working with a preshaped stock that ended up in my fire pit.  Nothing wrong with the quality of it, just my mistake and impatience.  So by default this is the first rifle that I inlet the barrel, drilled ramrod hole and did all the shaping on it.  Taylor Sapergia built the breech with the drum for me, and it worked great.  It is a straight barrel so it is heavy, but balances well and is one of the better shooting rifles I have made.

The finish is Linseed Oil and Beeswax

Photobombed by a stray cat

I engraved my friends initials on a steel plate in front of the trigger guard to cover up a boo boo.

Taylor's handywork

This is the very first shot with it.  30 yards off hand.  After this shot I used a rest and centered it.

I wouldn't have believed that was anyone's first rifle.  Nice work.  You're a natural.  Love those iron mounted rifles.
Nice work on that tang and trigger guard too.

Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

Beautiful work. One could easily rationalize the unswamped barrel on a mountain rifle.  A true mountain rifle will often be fired when your sucking wind, a bit jelly like in the legs and generally not at your best. Perfect time for that long heavy barrel to work it's magic.

Don't get too impressed it is just my first percussion and my first time inletting the barrel and ramrod channel and hole.  So there are a lot of firsts for me, but not the first.

When I first started studying long rifles I had very little interest in them.  Then I built one for my brother in law at his request and love them.  They are often seen as simple, but there is a complexity to them that make them a tricky build at times.

Cory,
I really hate that you all ran out of rocks out in your neck of the woods ;D If you had let me know I could of sent you a few :D

Seriously though, looks like you did a good job on the rifle, am sure you will build more, hard to do just one.

Hey CoreyJoe,

That is a rifle I'd be proud to own.  You see all of the teeth-gnashing issues you had with it, but it looks like a fine rifle to me.

I like the color you achieved and the finish too.

Gotta love that plate on the bottom.

Your friend is no doubt very happy.  Percussion?  Remind him that if God wanted us to shoot caplocks, why did He leave rocks all over the ground? I reckon Dennis might be able to help you like he said.  Heh, heh.

A man has to have a good shirt on for rifle pictures, and that Stamey's shirt fits the bill.  Been there myself on occasion.  I still lament Flips BBQ in Wilmington closing.  Hog Heaven down is Pawley's Island on 17 is close!   :-)

Best wishes and God Bless,  Marc

Cory Joe:  It's great to see the rifle completed, and I agree with the others - excellent work.  If you didn't run into issues during the build, we'd have to wonder at you...happens to all of us on a regular basis.  I'm delighted that the breech worked out for you.  You've done a great job on the long tang addition.
