tang and lock bolt taps
« on: August 31, 2015, 11:33:10 PM »
you folks using extension taps for your tang bolts.Getting to the point where I will be drilling holes soon and was hoping to use the hole thru the tang and wrist to help line up the threads in the trigger plate. Was going to use some of my Pops taps but his smaller ones seem a little short. He's got pulley taps,to large for what I need.Quess if I have to I could figure out the angle and do it by eye but going thru the wrist seems to be the easy way.If you know a good place to buy em I'm in,will be using them on my next build, thanks,Joe

I use extension taps.  I bought an 8-32 tap extension from ENCO.   http://www.use-enco.com/CGI/INSRIT?PMAKA=326-1534&PMPXNO=12387785&PARTPG=INLMK32

I've been able to tap thru, using the stock as a guide with regular length taps.  I think at times I had to start the tap thru the stock, then back it out, disassemble and then finish the process.

Guys,

A voice from the past!  Yup, the old time gunsmiths made longer taps to thread the holes for both the tang screw and also for the lock screws.  Both can be at a slight angle to the plate.  here is a photo of 19th c longer taps used by the Fry bothers gunsmiths in Ligonier, Pa.

Regular taps were made a lot shorter and with bigger shanks, these could not be used for this job.

Most industrial supply catalogs have pulley taps and long taps that have shanks smaller that the OD of the tap.\
