Sure looks like a situation best rectified by bayonets and closing distance ASAP. or at least closing distance. Nice idea, that painting, but now that the mounted man is out of the picture no sense standing around ;) Everyone knows that any kin of Tom's would be more then a match for any of those glasgowites in red when it came to swinging and poking.

Bit ignorant of this episode who won?

The Over Mountain Men completely routed Ferguson's forces, killed him and captured almost all of the Tory forces with him. Good account of the pursuit and the battle at King's Mountain by Randell Jones posted here: http://www.learnnc.org/lp/editions/nchist-revolution/4272

Here's the part I like ;D
Quote
From Gilbert Town, an aggravated Patrick Ferguson sent a message to the elusive Overmountain Men: “If you do not desist your opposition to the British Arms, I shall march this army over the mountains, hang your leaders, and lay waste your country with fire and sword.” Upon receiving Ferguson’s threat to march into his community, terrorize his neighbors, and destroy their homes, Isaac Shelby wasted no time. He saddled his horse and rode hurriedly forty miles to the home of John Sevier, another prominent militia leader in the overmountain region. After lengthy consideration, the militia leaders decided it would be best if they crossed the mountains on their own terms and defeated Ferguson on the east side of the mountains. Thus did Patrick Ferguson, the would-be hunter, become the hunted.
These frontier men were not accustomed to being threatened! They decided to take action.

Got to love those Tennesseans!  My ancestors were there too.  I have five lines who particpated in the battle, then moved west to Marion County once the dust settled and stayed there!

Darn, once I read that Mr Ferguson used threats when action was called for the respect I had for his ordannance vision evaporated.

This is an excellent tale for educating youth (and politicians) on the perils of running your mouth off and letting the other party become aware of the true scope of the negotiation process LOL.

Talk about galvanizing opposition. He should have said I'll burn every 4th house and hang every 10th man. Then they would have fallen over themselves to comply  LOL.

My ancestors were with Col. Campbell and the Virginians. Thomas Jefferson stated that this was the turning point of the revolution. The Overmountain Men wiped out the whole left flank of Cornwallis' Army.
