Replacing lock parts as they wear
« on: September 07, 2015, 10:24:23 AM »
I have a pair of rifles being built, both of which use L&R Model 600 locks. If, or when, the flies become battered - that is, need be replaced - are replacement flies a drop-in part with no fitting required? If fitting is required, can replacement flies be fitted now, or must each be fitted to their used lock?

IF the fly in any lock becomes battered something is wrong. The engagement area of the sear and the fly should be of equal hardness and little or no wear should occur. On single trigger guns there should be no wear on either part, sear or fly.

Don't worry about wearing out internal parts at this point.   You are more likely to break out a half cock notch with your set triggers, if you use them.  L&R parts are "drop-in" but that is not a good thing in my opinion.   If something breaks or wears out,  have a competent gunsmith make the repairs.

For my shooters,  I just keep a spare lock for parts.  They are for the most part interchangeable.   Some fitting and polishing may be required.  If you can't do the work,  don't worry about it.   Just find someone who can do the work, if and when the time comes.

I had to replace the fly in my L&R Dickert lock due to it hitting the floor which swallowed it up - instantly - I bought 3 extra's and haven't lost any more - of course.  The replacement was a drop-in and works perfectly. In over 3,000 shots, no wear of any of the parts (I use moly grease internally on all locks), excluding the normal frizzen wear, of course.  It still fires seemingly as a cap-gun, but my reflexes are still a minuscule faster although getting  slower as I get older (maybe getting better at shooting the flint?  This should be a plus, however I can't see as well to take advantage of the slowing down reflexes due to my age. ;)
This Dickert L&R lock has been a super lock for me, used as received & is super Fast - even Taylor remarked about how fast it was.
