Early Lancaster carving -Finished with pictures
« on: September 18, 2015, 01:55:03 AM »
Here are photo's of the completed rifle, I hope you enjoy them. This is the kind of rifle I love to build. Thanks for looking.

Jim

This is the lastest project that I have been working on. I finally got it to the carving stage so I thought I would share today's progress.

Here is the carving layout for the cheek rest side of the butt stock

Wrist layout

This is the carving of the cheek side that I did today. I still have a little clean up to do but it is close.

Here is today's progress

You can't have good carving unless you have good layout and design, then you need good execution. It looks like you have both. Very nice effort and I would love to see the end product.

Nice work! What does the opposite side look like ? The reason I ask, is you have a design on the left side close to the nose of the comb but not on the right side. So I wondered what you have saved up for that side.
Thanks
Richard

Beautiful rifle.  Hope you share the finished photos.

The other side is very simple. I am basing this carving design on RCA 1 rifle No. 67 & 70. So far I think it has turned out pretty good. Check out the updated photo's. I have the forestock carving to do and that will happen next week along with engraving the patch box.

Thanks everyone for your comments.

This is the type build I like to see. Inspired by original rifles, but not a copy. Very nice work and design. Thanks for sharing.

Looks real nice Bama.  I'd be tempted to double the number of lines on the "checkering" under the cheek piece. Cut another set of lines in each direction.  Does that make sense?

I agree with the others who have commented...excellent design and execution too.  I like your good use of available space.  Your carving design utilizes the fields available well.
