Scraping Planes
« on: September 28, 2015, 05:31:13 PM »
Lie-Nielson Toolworks just sent me their new catalog and I noticed their scraping planes https://www.lie-nielsen.com/nodes/4075/scraping-planes  I like their tools, but as is the case with all quality tools, they aren't cheap.  I've never used a scraping plane and wonder if there is any real advantage in using one instead just using regular scrapers.  Does anybody use scraping planes that can give their personal experience with them?  Thanks.

Scraping planes are generally intended for large flat areas like a table top or a door panel. As much as I like scrapers and use many individually shaped for specific jobs, I have a hard time seeing how a scraper plane could be used to much effect on the almost continually curving surfaces of a longrifle.

Okieboy,

That was my initial thought but since I've never used a scraper plane, I thought I might be missing something.  I'll stick with my rasps and scrapers and save about $200.  Thanks.

I think woodcrafters sells a set of three planes with sort of French curls.

Red Owl,

I have an assortment of nice scrapers and a Lie-Nielsen Model Maker's plane which I find handy.  That should do me for most projects.  Thanks.

or just break a glass jug........free scrapers ;D

I like the scrapers when you can control t hem and not have any tear-out problems....they HAVE to sharp and have a certain touch, then you get those little curls of wood, paper thin....NO SANDPAPER needed!!!! ;D ;D ;D

tomtom said so............

Yup. They're for flat stuff. If that's not what you're doing, you don't need one. I'd hunt for a Stanley or even a Kunz before jumping on the L-N train.

Aren't these also called "cabinet scrapers"?    Can't go wrong learning from Mr. Sellers, a real Master with teaching skills.

Funny you should have this post at this time -- I was "fishing" on Ebay tools yesterday and came across 4 or 5 Stanley # 80 scraping planes ranging from $9.95 to $35 and I also thought I pick up one of the lower priced ones just to try but then I thought that there is no surface on a long rifle that is flat enough for this tool to be of any use. Your mileage my vary ;D.

I never had any experience with scraping planes and was curious, which prompted me to ask about them.  Based on the answers I got here I'm not going to get one.  I've got a pretty good basic selection of scrappers, Iwasaki rasps and a small Lie-Nielsen model makers plane.  For the time being that's enough to get me in over my head with no difficulty.
