Early Winchester, VA Rifle...
« on: October 20, 2015, 07:37:45 PM »
This rifle is based upon the work of A. Haymaker, and is meant to represent some of the early pieces coming out of the Winchester, VA area.  Not a whole lot of bells and whistles on this rifle...  It has a Rice "C" weight barrel in .54 caliber, and Chambers lock.  The butt piece and trigger guard are from Dave Keck.  Typically, a more Germanic lock would have probably been used for such a rifle.  At any rate, the stock was from Wayne Dunlap, stained with home brew Aqua Fortise, and finished with Permalyn sealer.  If anyone has any questions, I'd be happy to answer them.  Thanks for lookin'!

Ed,
I like that style of rifle very much and you definitely nailed it!  Great color and patina.  The rifle is not overly adorned but not plain by any means.

Very, very nice, and I am very interested in this gun because I have a Haymaker to build this winter.  I will probably PM you with questions over the next few months.

I have to agree with everyone else, it's stunning. Beautiful carving and engraving, but not overly done.

What is the length of the barrel? Also, what process did you use to get that finish on the lock and the barrel?

Of all the good things about it, I particularly love that no-red honey to dark brown color.

Yes, that is a beauty. I especially like the antique finish, kinda used but not abused.

Thanks very much, everyone, greatly appreciated.

Dave, I have some photos you might be interested in when it comes time to start your project, let me know...

KC, the barrel length is 42".  The barrel and lock were both cold blued with Perma Blue, then rubbed back to the desired color using a gray Scotch Brite pad.  Very simple process.

Thanks again,

I am especially impressed with the cheekpiece carving.  The broad concave main scroll is beautifully executed.  In my experience, that is a tough one to pull off adequately, and this is stellar, not adequate.
