Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Jerry,
Maybe you should also tell how he did it.  Draw, cut, draw, cut, draw, cut.

I can cut that. The problem is drawing it.

Something special for sure. How many different gravers would have to be used to cut that?

This is a link to the Engravers Cafe thread the shows how Mr. Cogan went about engraving this. Quite and eye opener for those of us trying to learn to engrave this well. He just draws and cuts, seems so simple anyone should be able to do it! :-\

True, he makes it sound easy! But consider his engraving is showcased on the very best rifles and shotguns in the world, so that trigger guard is a piece of cake. Google his name to see some of the most fantastic Bulino and inlay work imaginable!  :o

Phil Cogan is so good at shading that it is very hard to tell if that piece is shaded or sculpted or both from the photo. If it is just shaded it wouldn't take over 4 or five different gravers  and a stipple point to do that.  If it is sculpted it might take about three more but it depends on how he sculpts. Some sculpt  with punches and some sculpt  with chisels. Some with both. If that is sculpted it looks like it was done with chisels. I sculpt almost exclusively with chisels. Knowing some about Phil Cogan I would say it is shaded by hand pushed gravers. They have a special geometry.

Surreal actually. It doesn't seem the human hand should be capable of that kind of work. I'm feeling inadequate...... :-[

Wow! I agree with what Mike said - except that it makes me feel substantially less than inadequate!

I can almost do that with a pencil, but not with a graver.   All I can say is WOW!   That is a LOT of talent and practice.

I've seen some of your work before over on the engraving forum, but Wow, what a surprise, and a delight, to see you posting pictures of some of your work here!
I enjoy engraving as a hobby, but I can't draw like that nor can I engrave like that, but I sure do enjoy looking at it!
Thanks so much for sharing with us.
John
And by the way, I'd really like some more pictures, but how would I get some?

 Hey Phil.
It is good to see you here. The word is that you have made some pretty nice old guns. It would be nice if you could show the guys some of them.
I have a collection of your engraving photos that I study. On the photo I first posted of yours is that shading all hand push?  Jerry Huddleston

The more I look at those photos, the more amazed I am.   He has to make thousands (or more like 10s of thousands) of microscopic cuts to do that shading.   I don't think that I would be physically able to do that even with a microscope.

Th e detail is so minute that I don't believe you can draw and copy, it has to be done free hand, my goodness!!!!I always enjoy seeing great art and craftsmanship all rolled into one and here it is. Thank you Jerry for cuing us into this man and thank you Mr. Coggin for showing more of it.

Believe it or not I don't think any of these are Phil's best work with the possible exception of the portrait. I think his best work is the side locks he did of the navel battle that were in the Engraver Magazine a while back.  That just doesn't seem humanly possible.  Just my opinion However almost anything Phil does is very hard to exceed or equal by anybody else that I know. There are only a half dozen engravers in his class in the entire world.
