Here's a little something I just whipped out
« on: November 08, 2015, 01:53:56 AM »
The original was made by the same hand as the "Faber rifle". The only place I've seen this one was in the 1985 June issue of Muzzle Blasts. This is my faithfull interpretation of that gun.
44" Colerain barrel in 16 bore, Chambers lock, trigger guard is a modified casting of of one of Goering's castings. Butt plate is worried out of a piece of sheet brass. The stock is a dead plain piece of super hard sugar maple.
Brewing my own analine dye now.  Starts with a canary yellow base and a couple different browns over the top.

Really nice Mike!!  Mike, why did you choose aniline dyes?  I have a lot of experience with them but I am curious why you chose the dyes over ferric nitrate.
Oh, and by the way, I don't believe for a minute that you just "whipped it out".  You put some work into that beauty.

I've been staining with analyne dyes for more than five years now. With my "patina" practices being what they are it's just alot easier to use, for me anyways. Some times it takes me a while to "whip it out' Probably have a month in this. I've had a lot of distractions lately, none of them very fun. Mostly building maintenance before it snows type of stuff and splitting firewood.... :P
I guess I could have taken better pictures ::)

Mike, I'm totally unfamiliar with your analyne dye process. Would you mind explaining it to me?

Jim Klien sells the old Homer Dangler stains which are analyne dye. They start as a powder and Jim mixes them with I believe wood alcohol. I always used three colors, sometimes two, one coat of each and rubbing the stock back to get the color I want. I mix my own stuff now.

Nice looking Mike,

I like the way the bottom of the lock molding frames the trigger guard.

Mike, I like your work, but this gun in particular, really speaks to me. Very very nice.  Your customer is lucky to get it.

Once more you've nailed it Mike. Love the architecture and relief carving, the "just enough" engraving. The gun seems to say "pick me up, lets go hunting!" Excellent work, I like it a lot.

OH GREAT!!

It's bad enough having to wait, but now that I've seen it ....

I just might bring powder and shot and try a pheasant with it on this trip.

As always a great job, see you Tuesday afternoon.

Ah, Tuesday. I was just going to email you and find out when this thing was going to stop cluttering up my gun corner..... I might have 16 bore wads, you're welcome to them.
