I didn't realize that paratroopers carried powder horns.

Looking at the quality work in that horn, I wouldn't care who carried it.  It is really nice.   I'll bet if you took it to Fort Bragg, you would have a fight on your hands trying to keep it.

Budget cutbacks.  

Powder horns make unique gifts.  I just did one for a buddy retiring from the Army who flew Blackhawks and had done four deployments.  I scrimed a big Blackhawk on it with the deployment tours and dates.  Put a strap on it made by Kris P and sent it off to him.  He loved it.

Looking at that 82nd horn, I only wish I could do work like that.  It's a beautiful horn.

40 + years ago the 82 airborne was in Ft. Bragg and the 101st was in Ft. Campbell.

I once saw an 1851 Colt Navy with a repro cylinder that had an aircraft carrier engraved on it
with a fleet of helicopters on the deck. E.M.Farris had it in his shop many years ago.

I know John, we do a show in the spring together, he's one heck of a fine Horner, artist. That be one fine horn there. I'd be proud to have one of his works of art.

 This is kinda like engraving a pair of vise-grips. You can do it of course, but it kind of odd. it reminds me of a beaded blanket I once saw at a Powow that had an Oakland Raiders emblem beaded on it. JMO.

Please focus on accoutrements and discussing them (nice horn, or not my style, or wish the neck was longer, or wonder what tool they use for scrimming, etc.) or this topic will be locked or deleted.

I think its a very nice job and if the recipient is happy, whats the problem.I have made several horns for Vet's that wanted their service memorialized and have always tried to keep it 'looking' as period correct as possible by using images that metaphorically represent medals, badges, patches, A/O's, etc. when possible.If the owner chooses to explain all the imagery to someone, thats his choice, but in the end he knows what it all means and it is logical to him.Never had a complaint. You have to allow a little accommodation in these things, I did draw the line with a fellow that wanted his Harley Davidson represented, just couldn't figure that one out. Just another way of seeing and doing things and still trying to maintain.

Spent a little time in the 82nd back in 1968-69 between tours in SE Asia. That horn would demand a very high price around Bragg.  very nice craftsmanship... fine piece of contemporary art as i see it.

I believe there is a long history of soldiers documenting the places they served, things they saw, etc. on powder horns.  Granted, today's soldier doesn't carry a horn for use with his rifle, but I think it's pretty cool to continue the tradition.
