SILVER MOUNTED SCABBARD COMPLETED
« on: November 20, 2015, 03:32:19 PM »
Finished up yesterday. Leather is 6/7 oz vege tan, sewn with linen thread, and dyed with vinegaroon. Mounts are sterling silver, hand made by me, and glued in place. The throat body is 20 ga silver and the drag/toe is 22 ga. The length of the scabbard is 23".The sword will be completed later by it's fine maker, Kyle Willyard.  Thanks for looking.

That's the tang of Kyles  blade Tim. He wanted to go forward with the scabbard while he finished up some other projects. I needed the blade to get a good fit.

I figured that, I was just trying to get a shot of the work in progress.

  Thanks, Tim

Here you go Tim. 22 3/4" x 1 1/4" x 5/32" thick at the shoulders, distally tapering to a thin point zone. Two deep fullers and 8" false edge. A very light weight blade. It will yet have much more work to refine it, and hand polish. I have no idea what type of guard or grip it will get, but I'm sure it will be a most out standing sword.

This will probably be the dumbest question anyone has asked you but here goes. I see you are using the blade to form the leather and keep things lined up, but how do you sew the leather with the blade in it? do you use glue then sew? Do you sew the seam then fold it over, if so how does it stay folded over? My brain hurts.

Not a dumb question. You're just over thinking it. The leather is sewn as a side seam, then wetted and turned to have the seam up the back. Much of the excess leather beyond the stitching is trimmed back closer to it, then it is pressed between two formica covered boards and tightly C clamped until dry. This is done with the blade in the scabbard. It could also be done with a wood or metal form inside. The leather must be vege-tanned in order to permanently form it.

when the seam is on the side to be sewn, how can you be sure that when you wet it and roll it it's in the right place so blade will fit? Surely the geometry isn't the same from the side to the back. Are you saying it is the same and the blade (or form) is in the leather when seam is on the side?

The blade is fitted as a side seam. All dimensions from that point on remain the same, no matter where the seam position is reset. If the blade fits as a side seam, it will fit no matter where the seam may be. Once wet and pliable, the blade, or form is inserted with the seam centered in the back. Go here to a tutorial on a center seam sheath for a knife. A sword scabbard is basically the same procedure, just larger scale. The press boards not only permanently  set the fit, they flatten the seam. If done right by trimming the edge close to the stitching, the finished seam width is narrowed but also covers over the stitching, thus giving the thread protection from wear. The press boards being tightened down on the wet scabbard also causes the leather to compress and stretch the scabbard a few fractions in width, giving a slightly more relaxed fit when once dried.

That's just what I wanted to see, how far along it is. Looks great, no doubt it will be an outstanding sword. Look forward to seeing it finished. Nice work Kyle.

 Thanks Wick, Tim

LRB, Thank you for taking the time to explain that. I think I get it. Sometimes I can be slow on the up-take. You would make a good teacher.
