First flintlock deer
« on: December 07, 2015, 06:05:09 AM »
I watched this guy chase a little buck off, he then worked his way to me and stopped slightly quartered to me at 65 Yds.  Sent the roundball through shoulders and the hide stopped it on the far side.  He plowed 10' and then fell over.  I can post a picture of ball tomorrow.
Taken with a .62 smoothbore canoe gun that I got from Moleeyes here on the forum.

Wonderful buck there.  Congrats.  I saw one in the dark tonight in the side splash of my headlights that was toting a major coat-rack too.

I've let a few walk this year, maybe they get big before I see them again.

Nice Buck! Shout WAHOO! And dance nice. Yeah, 62 rb in the shoulders? Not much tracking with a hit like that. Would do about the same for Elk.
I can't see open sights good enough anymore. Too much risk to shoot at critters. I even need a "cheater" with an aperture now.  My first FL big game was an Antelope.
Shot many since but never wrote it down so no idea how many. I think I was up to 70 perhaps 25(?) years back most with a FL and a couple with ML pistols.

That is a buck of a life time.
Big wide massive rack on an equally big bodied buck.
I hope you did not have to drag him too far.

Nice one!  And he hasn't had many shots taken at him.  Last one I saw that big, came out of F&W area near me.  12 points, if they had all been there.  One tine had been shot off, and there was a perfect .44 or .45cal hole through one of the main beams.  Talk about 'buck fever';)

He had been shot before, had a healed wound in hide and puss pocket on right leg,  I shot one the day before with inline that had been shot in foot and healed.
Heard 3 quick shots one morning from another guy that hunts the property(he tries to run me out every year even though I have permission from landowner) he walked over while I was hunting to see what I was doing, I told him fishing.  I asked if he got one and he said he shot at one as it ran by! He didn't even look for blood.  I just shook my head. Can't talk sense into someone like that.  Happens every year.

I think Wes is being a little modest.  That canoe gun from Jackie Brown is quite accurate; however, it has no rear sight and only has a 24" barrel which doesn't give you much to sight down.  I'd shot a few hogs with it here in the palmettos and swamps of FL.  But in heavy cover like that those shots were only 30 - 35 yards tops.  A 65 yard dead on shot is something to be very proud of indeed.  And like Dan said, a .62 round ball through both shoulders is a show stopper.  Atta boy, Wes.

Excellent.  I can't wait to someday take my first deer with a flintlock.

That definitely was some good shooting.  And that buck, he's worth being measured.  Yep, a real trophy.

Congratulations, that is a fine looking animal. A buck like that is rare around here. The bucks have been overharvested with bucks only seasons for years and very few animals make it long enough to really mature. Good job!

Darn nice deer right there! I had an eight pointer in the yard early last spring, just a beautiful animal, he came out a little behind three does. Yours reminds me of that one Wes. Congratulations.

Well done, Wes - wonderful buck with any gun, but spectacular with your stubby flinter.

Glad you said it, not me.  That's a short pony gun.

I do like the bore size, bit smaller than your moose masher ain't it D?

Recovered roundball weighs in 1 grain less than a new ball and measures .815

I'm fascinated how the hide tends to stop the ball no matter the range or caliber.  My rifle killed two hefty bucks last season, one at 17 yards and one at ~100.  Ball stopped under hide both times.  It's a 54 over a moderate charge (and 2x the bbl).  ;D

ALSO Mr. Wes K, where are you located (or where abouts was your hunt)?  Buddy and I are guessing about that.  Set us straight, settle the wager.   :D

O boy don't start the canoe gun debate! Haha
Not sure what he scores, typically don't score my bucks but I'll see what this one measures.  Just got the skull boiled
