Another Old Southern Build

This is my interpretation of a late Southwest Virginian rifle that may have been used and built on the Appalachian borders of Eastern Tennessee, Southwest Va., and North Carolina.

Built around a 44" Oct/Round .40 caliber Colerain barrel, heavily modified Davis Late Ketland lock and double set triggers, curly maple stock, with iron hardware, copper inlays and overlays and the entire piece is decorated with low relief carving and engraving.

The hunting bag, small belt bag, and leather journal were done by the late Sue Shroyer, the southern banded horn and bag knife by Steve Shroyer and the pan brush and forged vent pick by myself.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the comments. The carving is something I saw once on a Simon Lauck piece and Mark Wheland helped inspire me with the patchbox. I used a cross between a Tennessee and a Christian Hawkens for my stock pattern and the copper inlays and overlays were just something different. I guess you could say the inspiration for this piece came from many different rifles as well as schools.

The BP is actually a TOW Tennessee that I highly modified. The lock as it was wasn't bad but with a little tuning and polishing it's even better. Nice and quick.

    I like it a lot,  the stock architecture is similar to many Western PA guns.  It looks like you welded an inch or more to the forward extension of the BP, what else did you do to the BP?   
    I have used a number of the Davis Late Ketland locks, and have found them to be a very fast reliable lock of the type.  You did nice work on this one for sure.

Ron, no welding, that's the actual length of the butt plate. What I did was carefully take some of the crescent shape out of the back of the plate and file the flats and decorative rings on the top.

Ferric Nitrate, heat, and then a stain made of equal parts of LMF Cherry, Honey Maple and Walnut.
