Hunts For Healing Rifle
« on: December 16, 2015, 09:17:12 PM »
This simple Lancaster/Lebanon rifle started life as one of Dave Keck's precarves and is a special one for me.I was asked to donate my services to make a rifle for Hunt's For Healing http://huntsforhealing.org/a NE Pennsylvania organization that takes wounded veterans on outdoor adventures. The fact that my rifle would be used by the veterans rather than as a fundraiser made it that much more interesting for me.I am have dedicated this rifle to my Uncle ,Captain William F Holmes and his intials are engraved on the cheekpiece eagle. My Uncle Bill flew helecopters in Vietnam earning a Bronze Star,Air Medal and a Distinquished Flying Cross during his service there. He was from NE Pennsylvania and still lives there .I only wish there were organizations like this around when heros like my Uncle Bill and his comrades returned, maybe their return home would have been easier for them......

Great job Mitch and what a worthy cause. I can only pray that many deer get taken by those have given so much to protect this  country.

You did a fabulous job on the rifle and thank you for donating your time for this project.

Does your uncle happen to have a son by the same name, who might happen to be a Marine?

Also, what a beautiful rifle!   Good on ya.

Very nice rifle, Mitch.  It has Lebanon all over it.  I love your finishes.  I think they are the best in the business.

Bones 92

My cousin does have the same name but I don't believe he's ever been a Marine.

Thanks for the kind works about my finish. It was first a wash of tannic acid, two coats of my Iron of Nitrate Stain ,spit coat of seed lac and I tried something new for a top coat.I was pressed for time so instead of my usual Tried and True I used a tung oil based finish that Brownells sells.

The parts were all supplied to me but I believe it is his JP Beck Pattern.

Thanks the eagle was copied(dare I say that) from an original JP Beck eagle :)

This is a great thing you have done.  Too many are quick to send us to fight, but slow to care for our wounded when we return.  It is indeed a beautiful rifle.  What caliber is it?

I like it!  Sometimes guns with a little less decoration have a real appeal.  Thanks for all the hard work.

That is a nice rifle. Well done. I really like the color and the strong architecture. The spirit of the project is inspiring. Not many longrifles these days are built for missions. This one certainly is and you can be proud of that in my book.
