RUPP BARN GUN DONE
« on: December 22, 2015, 11:51:12 PM »
Hello again, I'm back with my third build this year! God, I love retirement! After the fairly complex Brandenburg Jaeger rifle I finished in Sept. I was ready for something plane and simple and nothing fancy this time. I had cut 4 nice curly blanks from the same plank and I wasn't too sure if they were hard enough for any carving so I decided to give it a try on this barn/schimmel rifle. Just the basics, and all from parts I had in inventory. The shaping was inspired by the "Herman Rupp 1973" rifle shown in RCA#57. Actually, the very 1st rifle I ever built from a blank was too, and no, I'm not showing that to anyone anymore  :-[
This has a .50 cal. x 13/16" straight oct. x 42" 1-66 twist, Getz  barrel. A previously owned large Siler Flintlock upgraded with Chambers Deluxe main and frizzen springs for better sparking. I made a single pinned trigger with no trigger plate, that has a nice light pull. Pull length is13 5/8" drop of 3 3/4" OA length of 57 3/4" and weight at 6.6 lbs. I haven't fired it yet but I will soon.
Eventually I will be selling it but I wanted to get some comments first. I hope someone likes it! It was actually a LOT OF FUN to build, and it went too fast so I am dreaming of a scenario where I build another Colonial barn gun repurposing wrecked Hession Jaeger parts (from the war)....or someting like that.
Here is my fourth "barn rifle" recreation:

I think it's beautiful. I hope I'm paying attention when you put it up for sale.

Retirement, huh? It just hit me what I've been doing wrong.

Nice work! Very red finish, just right for a Lehigh gun. What finish did you use?

Nice job. I like sleek look.  Curious about the barrel, is it a 13/16 - 50 cal?

Oh, I didn't mention the finish....it started with aqua fortis which only turned a med. brown then followed by layers of Laurel Mnt. Forge's honey brown, nut brown and cherry stains. Then it was sealed with 2 coats of Laurel Mnt. Permalyn. The 2nd coat of sealer had a crimson artists oil paint tint added in. I hand rub with a wool blanket scrap between sealer coats. That is what is in the pics. I just applied the first coat of BLO, and will continue with several more as the days go on.
That may actually be more attention than an original barn gun would have received, but I suspect the original buyer back then could have opted for some improvements for longevity of the piece if he layed down an extra chicken or two.
Oh, and I forgot to get a pic of the cute little "Lady Liberty" incised in front of the trigger guard. Maybe tomorrow.

Yes it is a slim 13/16" .50 cal.  John Getz makes a very fine quality barrel and I trust it will hold up quite well.

Wow, 13/16-50. Must be one of the reasons I thought it was sleek looking.

Hi Tom
That is a great looking little rifle that you have built there. That will be a deer getter for sure.

I love it.  One thing that caught my attention though was the single ramrod pipe, is that how the original Rupp gun was done?  Very nice work, I really like the simple lines.

Nicely done Tom.  I'm getting ready to start my first barn gun/smooth rifle as well.  Love the idea.

No carving, no buttplate!!  Yea!!!

That is a slick/sleek rifle, Tom. The entire geometry looks perfect.

its a beauty Tom.  Somebody will be very proud of it.   A suggestion.... fr the next one....since you are making a low cost no frills working gun, why not skip the SS Vent liner and use and internally coned vent using one of the tools made by members here.

Thanks for all the nice responses!
bb... you would be suprised at how well the bare butt holds up to all the years of wear & tear it is exposed to. Never seen a break yet. I did bend/bang out a metal cap to screw on the heel and used a flatter shotgun plate on one. Some guys just put a big wood screw at the heel point to take the brunt of the hammering.
This is the 1st schimmel I have used a cast trigger guard on. The others had a brass or copper bar, bent something like a shotgun guard, but the forward end was tucked under the trigger plate, which was secured by the barrel tang bolt.
Ganggreen...no the original had 3 rr pipes, but this is a "Pennsylvania poorboy" not a fancy one. One is all that is NEEDED.
Dr. Tim....good point on the SS liner. Historically not correct ;)

Thanks, Tom

I wish all of you a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and a great NEW YEAR.
