Beck fowler and pistol
« on: December 29, 2015, 06:23:30 AM »
The pistol is of course that nice kit from Chris Altland. I found the butt plate and trigger guard at the CLA Show a few years ago. The side plate on the fowler was cut from 3/32 sheet then sent to Keith Casteel to sculpt it, then back to me to finish it. There just had to be a pair.

Fantastic!!  It is so nice to see a garniture.  Sculpting sideplates, whether brass or silver, is a lot of work.

Bill,
Great looking guns as usual.  The longer I look at the pair the more the little nuances' become evident.  I have never met a Bill Shipman gun I did not like.

That's certainly a great looking set.

Both of these guns are flawlessly made - just delightful!  Bill isn't capable of doing mediocre work, and the time between his postings is worth the wait.
Is this pistol based on an original by JP Beck, and if so, can someone post images of it?  I personally am not especially enamoured by the pistol's architecture...the round short barrel and chubbiness of the stock leave me a little blank.  I understand that this pistol emulates a particular style and period, and the workmanship stands strong by anyone's standard.  Anyone else feel this way?
I hasten to add that I cannot offer any criticism that I think would improve this pistol - it is what it is.  It's the style, mostly the barrel, that leaves me wanting.

There are pictures of it in Whiskers Lancaster Co. book. The parts were original, but , though I may be wrong, the pistol stock is a modern creation.  And I don't know if the modern components are an exact copy.
I think the side plate is very wide. I'm as close as I can get top and bottom, but the wide panel gives the pistol a slightly chubby look in the picts. Looks dramatic in person though.

Quite a project. Very well executed. The one off mounts are refreshing.
