I buy my pin stock (music wire) at my local Ace hardware store. Hobby stores also carry it for pushrods.

By pinstock, are you referring to the pins that hold the barrel to the stock? If so, will finish nails work?

Also, thought of used/new steel guitar strings. My son saves his old ones for me to use in various projects.

Lots of people use plain old nails. You can turn them down if they are too big.

The wire on those little flags they use to mark, boundaries, elc, gas line, etc... works well, It is right at 1/16. You can buy bundles of them at one of the box stores if you can't find any old ones.

Like Tim I use the marker flag wire for thimbles and parts that are not going to be taken out. Cut in short lengths it is really tough stuff. Use bigger pins for the barrel, easier to punch out down the way if need be.

Music wire at any hobby shop. Very hard, can't cut with pliers.

I cut mine with either compound diagonal cutters or mini bolt cutters.   Either one should be around $10 at the hardware store.

I agree, that is why I like welding wire.  I still have a few pieces of music wire mixed in with my welding rod.  I hate it when I grab a piece of music wire by accident and try to cut it.  Fortunately I just about got all the music wire purged from my inventory.  It's kind of like German silver.  Every once and a while I find a rogue piece of GS from days past that I missed tossing out.

You can order music wire from the web page below.  Turn around has been good when I ordered from them.  I would suggest buying 2 or more "tubes" of the 1/16 " as the shipping box is a couple of inches square as I recall.

1/16 diameter steel non coated welding rod is available in a tube at many welders supply shops for a reasonable price.

You still need to be able to cleanup the cuts and round the ends?

I have always used music wire for pins. I cut it with a Dremmel tool with a cut off wheel and chamfer with the same. I really dislike soft pin stock as sooner or later you will raise a burr on one end of the pin or the other and raise a chip of wood on the stock removing a pin. A new source of pin stock I discovered is insulation hangers they are about 15 inches long by 5/64 dia and come in a pack of 100. Available at lowes or one of the other big box stores.  That's about 100 guns worth of pins for a few bucks. The advantage of 5/64 dia pins is you can use a 1/16 pin punch, easily found at most hardware stores. BJH

I recently bought some 1/16th inch music wire off of Amazon.com. They sent me 15 36" lengths which is probably more than I'll ever need. If you still need some, PM me an address and I'll cut some down to fit in an envelope and mail it to you.

When I purchase music wire, I use a map torch to heat the wire to red, seems to cut much easier.

Wool dauber handles or 1/16" drill bit shafts work. Both the same size.

No 3 or No 4 finishing nails. Always used No 3, and never used pin stock. Always worked fine. Don Getz suggested that years ago. If it was good enough for Don, it was good enough for me.

I've been using 6d finishing nails as long as I can remember.  They are .072" diameter, that fits a number 49 drill diameter hole, easy to cut with pliers or diagonal cutters, and dirt cheap.  They have worked well for me for decades.

Best Regards,

I seem to have plenty of 1 /16"  stems from 6" long drill bits.  I tend to break a few of them when drilling holes using the drill guide.  They make great pins with a Dremel.
