Is it basically the same??
« on: December 31, 2015, 07:03:07 PM »
Upon finally finishing up a pistol I had on my workbench for almost a year now...after staining, I realized what little bit of Chambers finishing oil I had left had dried up!  :-[ I really liked the results I got from the Chambers oil when I finished up a rifle with it awhile ago, but I'm considering trying Permalyn stock finish on this pistol. Just wondering if I can expect the same or close to the same results using it.

I have used both, but have more experience with Permalyn. LMF Permalyn sealer, by all accounts, is an excellent deep penetrating sealer and can be used without the somewhat thicker Permalyn finish. Permalyn finish is fairly glossy, and if you have left any minor sins on the surface of your work, it will be quick to point them out. On my last rifle, I started with a single heavy application of LMF sealer, and followed with several applications of Chambers oil over this with no further Permalyn finish. This created a very nice soft satin finish which I personally find much more pleasing than the hard gloss of the Permalyn finish. (This was the first time I used Chambers oil, and I was very happy with it.)
Chemically, the two finishes are not the same. Their actual chemical differences have been pointed out on previous posts here.

LehighBrad,

I have no experience with Permalyn but have used the Chambers Traditional Oil exclusively for some time now.  Before I bought my first can, I read a posting here from someone where they said they found that after you've opened and used some from a can of the Chambers Oil, if you seal the cap well and store the can upside down, it doesn't dry up.  I figured it was worth a try so I tried it and it worked.  Now I always do that and never had a problem with a can of it drying up.  Of course I've never stored a can of it right side up so I can't say what would happen and I don't intend to try it.  As they say, "If it ain't broke don't fix it".

Both are excellent finishes, and I think you'll get similar results with each in regards to application, ease of use, wear characteristics, etc.  The biggest difference (in regards to "look") is the Chambers Oil has a red tint to it, and the Permalyn is a slightly Amber color.  Depending on the color preference, or what you're trying to achieve color wise, that might be a consideration.

Thanks for the input fellas. Think I'll just get me another can of the Chambers finishing oil. I really like the deep satin finish it created on my long rifle and since this pistol is the matching piece for the rifle, I want it finished the same.

Permalyn is plastic. It not going to look the same. None of the synthetics do.

I have nothing against Permalyn, in fact Ed Wenger used it on a rifle he built for me and I like the finish. That said I have tried it and I just can't get the nice smooth results from it that I do using Chambers Oil Finish or other oil finishes I have used. I have tried several times using just the sealer or using the regular Permalyn. I guess I don't hold my mouth right ;D
