Loose the hounds!
« on: January 14, 2016, 05:16:59 AM »
Haven't done a hunters horn in a long time and the hands don't work as good as they use to, but it was fun!

It has a nice mellow bay to it.

Robby; Sir, this horn has a outstanding subject matter. I believe the current hand, eye coordination worked very well together. I think the workmanship is out standing. Great color. Thanks for sharing. AJ.

Beautiful work. It has a look that reminds me of acid etching on metal. Do you use special tools?

Okieboy, Other than files and rasps to shape the horn, I use these tools I make from concrete nails to scrimshaw with. Its kind of hard on the hands but its the only way I know.

Thank you fellows!!

Great horn.  One of my favorites to come along in awhile.
Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

Very nice, indeed Robby.  Love the color.  Is it natural, or did you use something on it?  Thanks.

Ky-Flinter, I buy the cheapest tea I can find in bulk, this time it was Lipton, and boil it. Checking from time to time and adding more tea till it is the color I like.

Wow! I would love to have that.

Beautiful work of art.  Area depicted is just a little east from my neck of the woods, so that makes it more interesting to me.  Great work.

Nicely done Robby.  Love the way you presented and executed your theme.  Darn good horn work to boot.

I had one of these when I was a kid, because Robin Hood had one on TV.  I would step out into the back yard and give it a long blow, and when I stopped I could hear dogs barking from all over the area.  It's time for a new one.

We raised and hunted foxhounds when I was growing up. More often than not it fell to my lot to feed and care for them. We would have as many as 20 at a time in the pack. When we were raising pups I was to blow the horn on my way to the kennel to feed. This trained them to come to the horn. One person could lead the whole pack with no problem. We had leadstraps made in varying lengths (thats how I learned to splice rope). Two hounds were coupled together side by side on each lead. You always fastened an old dog with a young one. The rule was if their nose passed my leg it got a swat with the rope. The older dogs policed the pups and trained them for you. The horn I used wasn't as nice as that one.
