just saw on midway USA the famous cap o matic for making #11 caps using soda can allum and paper caps now I've have youngsters that have those toy cap guns and the caps just don't sound as loud as they used too when i first got into ML i made my own crude very crude caps using tinfoil and the papper caps but back then the caps went BANG not just a small pop
so what your thoughts?                                                                                         these caps worked back then for plinking and some groundhog hunting

As a kid I used to disassemble shotgun primers, pound out the dent in the cap of the primer.  I then used the center from the large single caps, not the ones on a roll to replace the detonating compound.  I reassembled the anvil and the cap backtogether to create a usable primer.   The shells were then loaded with black powder cardboard wads .  Lead was pounded flat and cut into squares for "shot", the paper shells were then crimped shut and sealed with candle wax.  This was all accomplished with a hammer, chisel and a small nail.   The shells weren't much for range, but accounted for some cottontails and pigeons for the table.

Thousands have used it over the years.  It's in the same category as the ShamWow and the SlapChop, and ends up in the same place after the folly wears off.

Very good analogy TOF -- somethings are not worth fussing over  ::)- making caps are one of those items for me ;)

That does sound like alot of work for a potentially inferior cap. But who knows, they may be worth getting one for a just in case situation. Has anyone else been having a problem finding ammo on the store shelves? I went to the 3 stores I usually get BP supplies through yesterday and the shelves were bare--even the shelves for the modern ammo. the store workers said they were not sure when they would be getting more, as its been ordered but not been getting shipped. Talked to a couple friends and they are having the same problem--NO AMMO TO BE FOUND.

Some may not believe, or want to believe this, but I had a TC Hawken I bought in 1974. This rifle would shoot 3/8" to 1/2" groups at 50 yrds consistantly with Remington caps. Change the cap to another brand, the group would open to 3/4" to 1".  I believe changing cap brands are much like changing primers in modern ammo. Sometimes it makes a difference. The tap-a-cap, in my opinion, could not produce a consistant flame, from one to the next.

Let's not turn this into a political thing, but since Obama got elected and the Democrats control, sales of firearms, powder, and ammunition have been at an all time high as people stockpile that stuff in anticipation of changes in the gun laws.

All my friends have stockpiled 1000 rounds for every gun they own, including ML's.  I didn't find this necessary, as I already had that much for years.

Paper cap-gun caps are corrosive as $#*! from the potassium chlorate in them
