Yep that's what I do scrape and some places I use fingernails files cut in different shaps to help smooth the carving back grounds.

You're doing great work for your first build.  Your meticulous work reminds me of a couple machinists I know.  Looking forward to the finished rifle.

I love being told "I can't"

After a few Kibler kits, I'm back on my Chambers .50 cal rifle, and I had a difficult time with the engraving, especially on the lock. I tried push engraving and was having a mess with it. so I found someone who said they could do the lock for me, for a fee... wow, progress, so I wrote out a check, packed up the lock parts and sent them on.... a few days later, I was told (through e-mail) that "It was too hard to do, and I will get my parts back"

Forgetting any of the "then why did you tell me..." thoughts, I got my stuff back (with the check) and then said - I'll just do it myself... - A call with Steve Lindsay, a few transactions, Mr. Shippers book at my side, I started to engrave, dozens of practice brass sheets, and then the sideplate.

Thank you for telling me YOU can't, because I will.

Hooked on Mr Shipper's Book (Thank you for making it...)  - I know the Lancaster I am making a copy of does not have this engraving - But I had to do something other than another practice plate :) - Cutting out the patchbox and waiting on some silver will keep me busy -

I would provide two comments both meant to be constructive; first, I think Mr. Shippers would agree that his engraving style which you are in part emulating are not consistent with traditional American longrifle styles, and second, while your leaf work and borders look really great, keep working on your scrolls!
Keep up the good work.

Agreed!!! - Thank you for the feedback - all is most welcome - Scrolls, especially on a curved surface are a Bugger... and Yes, Mr. Shippers designs may clash slightly with Mr. Chambers design, So what may come of all of this is a mashup of a few influences that makes it unique. Time to practice some more...  ;)

Trigger Guard Engraved, Patchbox designed, shaped, domed and rough cut using images from the original. Sterling Silver sheet next in line to be cut out and then soldered to the brass - Then I get to inlet the whole patchbox. Need new flash for the camera - sorry for the quality.

I have been way behind on this project - with three Kibler kits under my belt, and working two full time jobs, I managed to make and inlet the patchbox (Brass with Sterling Silver), and yes, David Price, I made the actual patchbox. I deepened it so I would not see the drill holes. Built a taller rear sight due to my front sight being tall, and I like a little distance from the barrel. I am too skittish to engrave on the patchbox yet, so I am practicing on "Christmas Presents" some 3" Stainless knives I bought in bulk to try styles, designs and just "Get better" - I need to practice..

BTW - Thank you Mr Shippers - Your book sits on my engraving bench, and is a constant reference -

Almost ready to engrave, then Final sanding, a little Iron Nitrate and Lancaster Maple - a few coats of finish - then it's DONE -

Davec2 was absolutely correct when saying inletting this patchbox was a Bugger!!!! - Should have tried something easier for my first... and sir - your version of Jim's rifle is WONDERFUL - an inspiration to finish mine..

The knife picture is a little out of focus, but you get the idea - I need the practice - :) White lines are transfers and will be cleaned up as I engrave over them....

Hi All - I've been building - just not posting.....

Well, the patchbox engraving is all completed, and inlet into the stock, the stock is stained with only one coat of oil so far (needs a few more for a little more shine, the carving came out sharp (I ordered a Haynes kit from Jim Chambers, and Barbie said "Make sure your carving does not look like a wet bar of soap) I still laugh at that - and she is right, so Jim, no wet bar of soap here, the furniture is engraved and waiting it's turn to get attached -

A few  more coats of oil, a Pewter barrel bluing, and I think we will be O.K.

Sorry for the low quality lighting, it's in my shop on a snowy day - and I'm no photographer....

Chat soon,

Jon
