Jaeger toe plates ?
« on: February 16, 2016, 02:01:37 AM »
Has anyone seen a Jaeger rifle with a toe plate? A bark inclusion at the toe chipped off " rather small chip"  and splicing a fix right there would be very difficult and it would be neater to just add a short plate if that would be kosher. Thanks to all...............JZ

Rarely.  Those I do see tend to be from the second half of the 18th century, and will have rococo or neoclassical shapes.  Sometimes engraved, sometimes not (matching the rest of the hardware).
When a reenactor says "They didn't write everything down"   what that really means is: "I'm too lazy to look for documentation."

Thanks for the toe plate info. I think I will go the toe plate route.  JZ

A toe plate is just another decoration. It doesn't keep anything from splitting. The extra screw holes may actually weaken an already vulnerable area.

If your school calls for one, put one in.

These are close to a high art original.
These were on the last gun I did. The one on the left is a swivel plate for a sling,

Very nice, Jerry. Your chiseling is superbe. Better than most originals.

How bad is the chip?
Show us a picture, please.
Many times I have sanded the area smooth, then glued a piece of wood in place.
If you align the grain properly, it is very hard to see, and the joint is stronger than the original.
Playing with wood stains in a small area like that is easy
Leather stains are magical!

Old Ford, the chip isn't all that bad actually. Because of the remaining bark inclusion a toe plate would be my best option given the fact that toe plates have been used in the past. In fact I'm almost done. Thanks to all.       JZ
