Is river birch any good for gun stocks ? Or would it be better for cabinets ?

I have used yellow birch. I don't know if that is the same. The Scandinavian countries use lots of birch for gunstocks.

River birch isnt even good for burning in the fireplace, especially if it's been sitting on the ground. It's not usually too soft and punky. Only one step up from pine.

I have built 2 guns out of yellow birch. It works about like cherry.

A friend was building a gun out of ash. He ran into wood rot while cutting
the barrel channel. He told me where he gets his wood doesn't have any
more ash. They do have a pile of river birch though. He thought it might
work. Trying to find out how to lend a hand.

There is a huge difference between Yellow Birch and River Birch. In our part of the country River Birch is softer than Pine.
