Where do you get horn turning stock?

I just cut up the rest of the raw horns I had for turning stock.   I got two good tips (maybe) out of the six or seven (I lost count)  remaining horns.   The problem was voids.  It has been a very frustrating day as I spent a lot of time trying to turn around voids in two of the tips; without success.  Where do the rest of you get good turning stock?

 Are you talking about horn tips to turn? If so, I have contacted 6 different people in the last week or so and no one has any tips to sell. I find it hard to buy tips sight unseen unless they come from another Horner, as they know what you need.
 If you find a source please share it with us.
 To help stop delaminating I find drilling and rough turning the stock as soon as possible after receipt. One batch had the ends painted to slow or stop the delamination but still had voids in them,

Yep.  That's what I am talking about.  I was hoping you had a source given all the screw tips you make.

Mark: try some of the knifemaker supply sites. I have always had good success with Masecraft.

You can get water buffalo horns at Petco and other places.  Used for horn tips on rifles.  It's black and takes a high polish.  I can see why it couldn't be used for turning stock.

What about Powder Horns & More?   They claim to have lots of polished horns and have black horn rolls which would work for some horns.

 Got a note from Lee, seems since the drought in Texas the slaughter house he was getting them from has closed. So he has none to sell. In the past he was my go to guy.

I am thinking that I will just buy some of the less expensive polished horns from PHAM and cut the tips out of the ones with long/thick tips.   I have done that before and cut the rest of the horn up for rings.   I don't want to do that a lot though.   I already have a number of tip-less horns.  I guess I should start making horn boxes.  ;)

In the past 5 yrs or so,I have found pretty thick tipped horns at tandy leather. It was nice to walk in and hold them before buying. That was in Fort Worth Tx.

I have had issues with horn rolls similar to the voids in tips.  Very frustrating to turn them and they split because of weak points.  There just doesn't seem to be way to tell a good one from a bad one.

Tim, I think that any turned round horn piece is called a horn roll, due to  no better description.  Gerry at Powder Horns and More carry them, but I haven't seen any light colored ones on his website.  You might contact him and ask.  I have gotten a few lighter cow horn rolls off of eBay, as I mentioned, but they are far and few between.

You want a horn roll solid and not like a jelly roll or you will have problems.

There used to be a guy named Torres I believe who used to sell water buffalo horn tips in many sizes and lengths.  I used to buy some from him, but the quality went south, as I was getting to many tips with delamination centers.  Out of a dozen or so, I could only use two or three and spent more time and money sending them back for exchanging for solid tips.  Don't know what ever happened to him, as I tried to call him and his phone was shut off. That's been about four years ago.

 Thanks for the leads but Pen blanks are a little small. As for the Antler tips on the one site, I think 36 bucks is high for 2-3 blanks that also look to be to small except if used for the tip piece on a two piece tip. The Buffalo tips, weather American Bison or Water are not what I would use on a horn. Picky? Yes

Tim, I don't know if you realize it or not, but all of the horn rolls for sale out there are Asian water buffalo and most come are imported from India.
