Hadaway lock
« on: February 23, 2016, 07:12:54 PM »
Hi Folks....I am hoping to fix a lock for a gentleman, and I think its a Hadaway. The small axel broke off ...The large axel is .345 dia and the small is .125 dia. The fly revolves around the small axel. Any help, short of me making him a new tumbler, would be appreciated.
   Thanks....Dan Fruth

You can put a music wire/drill rod pin in for the small axle, but you will need a lathe and heat treat skills to do it.   Of course, this assumes that the two axles were perfectly centered to begin with.   If not, then the bridle may have to be bushed.    Actually,  as I think about it,  it probably should be bushed anyway with a new axle.

If there are any other defects in the tumbler, then I think a new tumbler would be in order.   However,  if you make a new tumbler then a new sear might be necessary.    When you start replacing with custom parts, then more and more needs to be done.   It makes me tired thinking about it.

Simple fix if the tumbler isn't hard as glass is this.
Using a lathe with a three law chuck, center (edited by tdg) drill the area where the
small support axle was. Drill and tap it to 5x40 and then thread a 1/8" piece of drill rod
to 5x40 and turn it in tight and cut it off to the length need to barely come thru the bridle.

Thanks Charlie....The threaded hole for the cock is 6-32 and tap drilled so close to the small axel I think that is why it broke....I figured on fixing as Bob said if I couldn't find a new tumbler....By the way, I found a really nice Bucks County fowler, possibly Peter Kuntz Sr., and I'm getting metal parts ready for stocking...This piece has not been in print before (to my knowledge) ...I found it on one of the antique arms auction photos and looking forward to stocking up...46" 62 Cal round barrel smooth with rifle butt plate, trigger guard and no patchbox! Pretty cool! Not sure if I can bring myself to trade it for a tumbler   LOL!!...I'll send you a mail Charlie.....Thanks

I will try to get that out later today. If I am not mistaken Doc made all his screws 5-40 thread. This one is not drilled so you can make it whatever you whatever you want.

Just for future repairs of this type, I use socket head cap screws for the axle. They are offered in a wide array of fine machine threads, and are nearly always grade eight hardness. I have added an inboard axle to more of the old Dixie F1' and P1, locks than  I can recall. I also use them for interior lock bolts on locks that have these parts missing.
